Congratulations Keeghan
Congratulations to Keeghan Grande for his award-winning creation that has won him and the College $500 from the Port Macquarie Hastings Council Youth Art competition. Very impressive work indeed, Keeghan, who was very humble about his achievements.
My submission is a recycled surfboard/skateboard deck chair made from recycled materials including wood pallets, surfboard and skateboards. My creation was built from my love of surfing and skateboarding I didn’t want to just throw out my broken boards so I got a little creative and now I have a recycled creation.

College Lunchtime Volleyball Competition
Congratulations to Mr Michael Cannon, Leader of Sport and Georgia Smith, PDPHE Trainee who have put together a great lunchtime volleyball competition. THE BLESSING AUSTRALIA
Churches UNITE to sing The Blessing over Australia
During this time of uncertainty and physical isolation, over 300 local churches united together in Australia to sing a blessing over our nation. I invite you to take a few moments to listen to this beautiful blessing for Australia.
The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.
(Numbers 6:24-26)
Men's Health Week 15th - 21st June
Men's Health Week promotes the health and wellness of all men and boys in Australia. With the life expectancy of males lower than females, and the rate of non-communicable diseases, cancer and accidents accounting for the majority of deaths, it aims to create a positive environment and awareness for men's health and wellbeing issues.

Year 10 Immunisation - rescheduled for Friday 19th June 2020
Due to problems that NSW Health encountered, some Year 10 students, as well as students from Years 7 & 8 who required catch-up immunisation, were unable to receive their vaccination.
Another clinic has been scheduled for Friday 19th June for those students who missed receiving their vaccination yesterday. The College has collected all immunisation consent forms from Year 10 students who still require the vaccination and will keep them safe on hand for the next clinic.
Please note: If your child forgot their consent form, please bring it next Friday, 19th June if you wish to participate in this program.
Late Arrivals and Early Departure Procedures
There has been an increase in parents collecting their child/ren early and I am writing to request your support in relation to partial day attendance.
Arriving late and departing early places increased pressure on students in relation to catching up on missed work. It is disruptive for other students and teachers when students enter or leave a lesson during class time.
Wherever possible, please ensure appointments are made outside of school hours. However, if this is not possible, it would be appreciated if collection times can be arranged for the end of a period. For period times please refer to the bell times below.
Arriving late
Students must report to the College Office prior to going to PC. This includes arriving late during PC time (8.45am-9.05am). Doing this will avoid students being marked absent.
Early departure
When collecting students early from the College, please follow the procedure below:
- Note from parent/guardian Noting reason for early leave, the time that the student will be leaving and who will be collecting your child.
- Students are to report to the College Office prior to morning PC or recess, where an Early Leave Pass will be issued.
- The student can then meet you at the arranged time by showing the pass to their respective class teacher at the beginning of the lesson they will be leaving from. When close to departure time, the student then politely informs the class teacher that it is time for them to go to the office to be collected.
Students contacting parents to collect them
The practice of students contacting parents to collect them without notifying the office first causes great disruption to classes and other students' learning time. I ask that if your child does contact you to collect them, that you please call our College Office on 5525 4100 so we can make arrangements for your child to meet you at the office.
Classes often move into other rooms or lessons are taken outside, this could cause a delay in collecting your child if pre-arrangements have not been made

Year 7 English Examine Themes
Miss Lewis' Year 7 English class enjoyed a different way of practising their paragraph writing skills recently while studying the short play 'Honey Spot', by Indigenous playwright Jack Davis. This task of writing about the Indigenous play tied in nicely with Reconciliation Week.
Over a number of lessons, the class examined important themes from the play, such as teamwork and unity, along with investigating how writers can get their message across to an audience. Bringing their knowledge together, students then practised the PEEL paragraph structure - sometimes a tricky thing to master! Their skills were put on display as teams raced to be the first to construct a creative and cohesive paragraph while using the many spaces and surfaces around the classroom.

World Environment Day – English Lesson Style
Last Friday, several of our English classes put into practice our ‘Appreciation of Beauty’ strengths and held creative lessons outside in our beautiful College grounds.
Year 9 students used their sensory imagery to write several short stories. In their first attempt, they were required to use visual imagery as a stimulus and write for twelve minutes. Sitting in the amphitheatre they could use anything they could see in their writing. Next, it was auditory imagery and the sounds of nature, the school itself and even the planes flying above as stimulus. Finally, the students were able to use one of the remaining senses to write their third piece.

Year 8 students have recently been studying different Shakespearean stories. The students filmed their own versions of different scenes from Romeo and Juliet – with some very creative interpretations in action!
A contemporary version…
Juliet: ‘Tybalt – some guy has been hitting on me!’
The 'Balcony' scene
“But soft! What light through yonder window
“O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Romeo?”
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon.”
Romeo ‘defeats’ Mercutio

Debating
2020 St Joseph's Regional College v MacKillop College Debating and Public Speaking Competition: Thursday, 27th August. Week 6 of Term 3.
Open to all students, the 2020 SJRC v MacKillop College Debating and Public Speaking Competition is now seeking expressions of interest from students of all year groups to train and compete as SJRC representatives. We are seeking one team per year group (four team members plus two substitutes) and individual students wishing to try their hand at public speaking.
Students will be expected to regularly attend a one hour weekly coaching session at school starting in Week 8 (Likely to be Wednesdays 3.30-4.30pm).
Students will be informed of their debating time and place by their debating coach. Names of debating teams will be published after the first two coaching sessions this term.
Curious? Absolute beginners and experienced debaters and public speakers welcome. Contact Mrs McKee via email now to express your interest in the 2020 SJRC Debating and Public Speaking Team.
Be Organised for Class
It is important that all students are organised and ready to learn every lesson. The following is a list of items essential for each English class.
- A covered workbook with your name and teacher’s name written clearly on the front
- College Diary
- Laptop or iPad (fully charged)
- A novel for 10 minute daily reading
Be organised and give yourself a chance to do your best in class.

Significant Literary Dates
This week, we remember a very significant literary figure. Over the years, Anne Frank’s account of her years spent hiding in a cramped secret annexe in Amsterdam during Nazi occupation has become an extraordinary record of a young girl’s story. Anne eventually perished from disease in a concentration camp, but her writings live on.
Anne was born on June 12th, 1929, and so this week, on what would have been her 91st birthday – we remember her.
