As we conclude the school year for 2024, it’s with joy that I reflect back on how much we’ve accomplished within our College community, especially over the last weeks of what has been a very busy term.
This week’s newsletter highlights the 2024 Year 7-10 Academic, Service, and Spirit Ceremonies. These events are a celebration of student achievement and dedication, and I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Mr Ian Lutton, Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching, Ms Anne Marchment, Leader of Curriculum, and our incredible office staff for their seamless organisation of these ceremonies. I would also like to mention and thank our Year 10 presentation helpers - Harley Rayment and Sienna Weston who did an amazing job on the stage.
On Tuesday, our College gathered for the Thanksgiving Christmas Mass—a beautiful opportunity for reflection and gratitude for all we’ve experienced as a community this year. Special thanks to Mr Matthew Bushe, Assistant Principal - Mission, Mr Shane Hyland, Leader of Evangelisation and Ms Emily Burg, Youth Ministry Officer, for their thoughtful planning of this meaningful celebration.
Tuesday was also a big day for sport, as we held our Junior Sports Awards. Congratulations to all students for their hard work and dedication throughout the year in sport. A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Damien Kelly, Leader of Sport, whose calm leadership and organisation have ensured the success of our sports program.
Our Year 12 Class of 2024 has ended the year on a high note with the release of their HSC and ATAR results. It was lovely to welcome them back to the College on Wednesday for a celebratory breakfast, marking their achievements and providing a final opportunity to connect with their peers. I will take this opportunity to congratulate our 2024 Dux - Abhishek Amada and our Runner up to Dux - Charlotte Shee. My thanks to the Learning & Teaching team and Mrs Kellie Croft, Leader of Student Wellbeing, for coordinating this celebratory morning.
Finally, during the Year 7-10 Awards Ceremony, I had the privilege of addressing our College community. I would now like to share that message with you, as it reflects on the year gone by and looks ahead with hope and anticipation for the future.
------------------------------------
On behalf of the St Joseph’s Regional College community, I would like to congratulate our students on the wonderful contributions they have made this year of ‘Living Truth’. Throughout the year we have witnessed our students participating in and achieving their personal best in the classroom, in their chosen sport, in the performing arts and music, in their spirituality and faith. They have raised money, served others, cheered each other on, prayed, participated in competitions, camped, retreated, celebrated the success of others and grown in so many ways. Every individual should be proud of what they have achieved in 2024.
Today is an opportunity for me to say thank you and express my gratitude to those who have played key roles in shaping the success of 2024.
I would like to acknowledge our 2024 Junior Pastoral Care Leaders. These young leaders have done an exceptional job supporting their PC teacher and their peers. I would also like to acknowledge the Junior Mission, Stewardship and Wellbeing Leaders for their involvement in initiatives they have led during 2024.
I would like to extend a special thank you to key staff members who have been instrumental in student achievements at the College this year.
To the members of our Leadership Team:
Mr Bushe, Mr Lutton, Mrs Furney, Ms Marchment, Mr Robertson and Mrs Goldie; your service in leading the College is greatly appreciated and your commitment to improving and innovating what we provide for our students is invaluable.
To our Leaders of Student Wellbeing:
Mrs Jensen, Mrs Hulbert, Mr Kalchbauer, Mr Sainsbury, Mrs Crilley, Ms O’Reilly, Ms Flanagan and Mrs Croft; your Pastoral Care of our students is ‘of the highest standard’ – thank you for all the work you do in your leadership and behind the scenes to support the students and families in your respective houses and year groups.
To our Leaders of Learning:
Mr Jennings, Mrs Grein, Ms Roulstone, Mr Warneken, Mr McLachlan, Mr Kobelke, Mr Rossington, Mr Pares, Mrs Handley, Mr Moore, Mrs McLeod, and Mr Constantine; thank you for stewardship over the learning and teaching in the College and for ensuring our high expectations for learning are maintained.
Thank you to Mr Hyland and Emily Burg for ensuring our Catholic Mission and Identity is strong, Mr Kelly for organising all of our sporting teams and events and ensuring we are competitive in a wide range of sports, Ms Mooney for resourcing our College Library, Mrs Tinsey and Mrs Bale for giving great advice on careers and future pathways, Mrs Freeman for prioritising Numeracy and testing in the College and Mrs Butler for ensuring excellence in our co-curricular Music space.
To our Pastoral Care teachers, thank you for engendering a real sense of spirit in your house groups. Your work goes ‘over and above’ a teacher's normal call of duty.
And to all course teachers, teachers assistants, our Student Support Worker, counsellors, Canteen staff and all support staff, your dedication to our students’ learning and wellbeing is appreciated. We are blessed to have such a caring and supportive team of staff.
I would also like to give my sincere thanks to a number of special people who work tirelessly behind the scenes at our College. Firstly, thank you to Mrs Wendy Welsh, Mrs Michelle Reynolds, Mrs Kelly Mooney and the dedicated team of ladies in the College administration office. These ladies are an exemplary team, working together and going beyond the call of duty to ensure that all staff, students and parents are supported in every possible way.
To Mr John Sprague and our Maintenance Team who keep our College grounds looking superb - thank you.
On Tuesday this week, after our Christmas Mass, we farewelled our departing staff, and we wished them all the best for the future. Be assured of our, St Joseph’s Regional College, blessings.
I would like to extend best wishes to the parents of our Year 10 families, to those families who will see their sons and daughters embark on a new educational journey at Newman Senior Technical College in 2025, and also to other students who are leaving us to pursue other ventures. Thank you for your loyalty and support for our wonderful College, and we wish you well in the future.
On behalf of the College community, I once again thank you for being part of our family and extend my warm congratulations to all our award winners from the Sport Awards, Academic and the Service & Spirit ceremonies.
As we close out 2024, I wish all students, families, and staff a safe and joyful holiday season. May this time be filled with rest, reflection, and cherished moments with loved ones. I look forward to welcoming you all back in 2025 for another exciting year at St Joseph's Regional College.

On Tuesday, students and staff came together for the final Mass of the year. We thank Father Paul for leading our Thanksgiving Christmas Mass.
In Father Paul's homily, he spoke about the origins of the word Christmas by explaining that it comes from old English Christes Maesse or Christ's Mass. His point was that without Christ, Christmas is meaningless and that we should spend some time this Christmas giving thanks to God for sending his son Jesus into the world to be 'God with us' Emmanuel.
Also, during the Mass, several Year 10 and Year 11 students were commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at our Thanksgiving Christmas Mass. Some of these students administered Holy Communion for the first time at this Mass.
Congratulations:
Year 10 students: Dane Bittu, Jack Duff, Adam Jennings, Archie Taylor, Jack Daley, Sienna Weston, Sophie Marchment and Isabella Campbell
Year 11 students: Mia Lawrence, Sienna Monk, Lilly Fraser, Layla Armstrong and Alannah Steele

Year 7-10 Reports
Year 7-10 Semester 2 reports have now been issued via the Compass platform. These reports will reflect your child’s learning across the second half of the academic year and will consist of the following aspects:
- Common grade in each subject studied using the A-E Common Grade Scale
- Descriptors explaining your child’s Knowledge, Skills and Understandings in each subject as well as their Commitment to Learning descriptors, which are a reflection of their attitude to the learning environment. These descriptors are a fantastic reflection tool and acknowledge the relative strengths and areas for growth in your son or daughter's learning progression.
- Pastoral Care comment, which is a reflection of your child’s engagement in PC and aspects of college life throughout the year.

I would like to wish all SJRC families a holy, safe and joy-filled festive season. As I often remind our students, every person within our school community has much to be grateful for. It is my hope that every young person within our school has felt valued and cared for at school this year.
We appreciate that school holidays are a time to break free of the routines of school and work for a period of time. Our staff work hard at the beginning of each year to ensure students are welcomed back to a school environment that is safe, supportive, predictable and consistent. To this end, please be aware of the following guidelines that may be of assistance to you in ensuring that students return to school in 2025 in full alignment with our Code of Presentation. This will in turn underpin a positive start to the school year and avoid negative interactions with College staff who are committed to fostering and maintaining high expectations of student conduct. Family Connect in Schools (FCIS)
Whilst this time of year is full of festivities and celebrations, the holiday season can also be challenging and difficult for many. A reminder to our SJRC families of the Family Connect in Schools (FCIS) service that is provided to us through a partnership with Social Futures. This service offers confidential social work support to all SJRC families. Crisis support, NDIS support, mental health referrals, housing support and assistance with accessing government benefits are all areas that families can receive free and confidential assistance with by tapping into this service. This is a wonderful service that continues to make a difference to our families who are engaged with the service. Any family member of an SJRC student can self-refer by contacting our Program Worker, Jasmine Waters. Jasmine is available for any College families who may benefit from her support over the school holiday period. Jasmine can be contacted on the details below.

2025 School Travel Applications are Now Open
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.
Students progressing from year 2 to year 3 and from year 6 to year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:
- are continuing at the same school, and
- are residing at the same address, and
- have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.
Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.
Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification for their school travel entitlement need to renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, so their travel entitlement can remain valid for the start of the 2025 school year.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Note: From the commencement of the school year in 2025, Lunch specials will not be available on Mondays, and there will be an increase in pricing on some items.
The Canteen opens at 8.00 am every school day.
