Literacy Enrichment - Get Involved!

What is ‘Literacy Enrichment’ at SJRC?

It’s opportunities in and out of SJRC that enrich students’ understanding of and experience with media, film, reading, writing, and language in general. It’s excursions, festivals, writing, debating and public speaking competitions, and live performance.

Books That Have Changed Me

This term, we are sharing stories about the stories that have changed us. These might be books from our childhood, our youth or simply last week!

Thank you to the following staff who have contributed to the first part of our series.

Penny McKee

The Coles Family Picture BookT3W4_Funny_Picture_book.png

The Coles Funny Picture Books 1,2 and 3 is a potpourri of stories and verse set at the turn of the century. First published in 1879, I got my hands on the whole series nearly 100 years later! Underscored by a touch of Australian larrikinism, the books were intended to entertain and educate young Australian children about the perils of misbehaviour. Coles Funny Picture Books utterly enriched my childhood and informed my love of character, verse and history.

Heidi O'Reilly

If This Is A Man by Primo LeviIf_this_is_a_man_the_truce.jpg

This memoir reveals Primo Levi's experiences as an Italian Jew during WW2. It details the horrors of being imprisoned, starved and tortured in a German concentration camp and then the chaos of trying to make his way from Poland to Italy once the war was declared over. This first-hand account moved me in so many ways and his story remains fresh in my memory even though I read it 20 yrs ago.

And over to you!

We welcome the whole SJRC community to be a part of conversations on books and reading in general. Have you read something that changed your perspective, or a story that still resonates with you even now?

Please share with us the story about a story that may have impacted your story!
