2024 Junior/Intermediate Diocesan Basketball

The Diocesan Junior/Intermediate Basketball Gala day was held in Port Macquarie on 31st July - 1st August.

The following report has been provided by Open Girls Coach Mrs Gray.

The 9/10 Girls St Joseph's Regional Sports Team recently competed in the Lismore Diocesan Basketball competition, showcasing a commendable blend of experienced representative players and versatile athletes who adeptly transferred their skills from other sports. The competition was an enriching experience for all team members, as they demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and a strong willingness to learn from their peers.

 Day 1:
Game 1: SJRC vs. John Paul College (Coffs Harbour)
The first game of the competition proved to be the most challenging. Facing John Paul College from Coffs Harbour, the girls started strong, surprising both themselves and their opponents by taking an early lead. Despite their promising start, the team struggled to maintain their momentum, ultimately losing by 25 points. This game was a valuable learning experience, highlighting areas for improvement and fostering a sense of determination among the players.

Game 2: SJRC vs. Woodlawn (Lismore)
In their second game, the team found their stride and began to work more cohesively. Their improved communication and strategic play led to a commanding and comfortable win over Woodlawn from Lismore. The victory boosted the team's morale and confidence, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the competition.

Day 2:
Playoff: St Joseph's vs. Ballina
The second day began with a crucial playoff game against Ballina, the top team in the opposite pool. The girls approached the game with strategic determination, employing the lessons learned from their previous matches. Their hard work and tactical play paid off, earning them a spot in the final.

 Final: SJRC vs. John Paul College (Coffs Harbour)
In a dramatic rematch against their original rivals, JPC from Coffs Harbour, the girls were eager to capitalise on their newfound cohesiveness and teamwork. Despite their best efforts and significant improvement over the course of the competition, they ultimately fell short against a very strong and experienced team. The final game was a testament to their growth and determination, and although they did not secure the win, the experience was invaluable.

The 9/10 Girls St Joseph's Regional Sports Team displayed exceptional sportsmanship, adaptability, and a strong team spirit throughout the Lismore Diocesan Basketball competition. They learned from each game, supported one another, and continuously improved their performance. The blend of experienced players and skilled athletes from other sports created a dynamic and resilient team.  Congratulations to all the players for their hard work and dedication. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and achievements in future competitions.

Our 9/10 Boys team were narrowly defeated in the final by JPC, despite beating them in the rounds. Consequently, the boys will apply for a wild card entry into the CCC Junior Championships in Sydney.
