Young Entrepreneurs Showcase Innovation and Environmental Consciousness at YHQ@SJRC Presentation Evening
On Tuesday 20th June, I had the pleasure of attending the YHQ@SJRC Presentation Evening, with our young entrepenuers captivating the audience consisting of a judging panel, parents, staff, and students. It was an outstanding event that showcased the exceptional talent and determination of our Year 10 students.
Venturing beyond their comfort zones, a group of 23 Year 10 students bravely stepped forward to test their entrepreneurial skills, and they rose to the occasion. Tasked with addressing the critical issue of waste plaguing our landfills, waterways, and atmosphere, the five teams were presented with a core challenge centred around circular economy principles.
Engaging in the design thinking process, these students embarked on a journey to define the problem, empathise with end-users, and ideate innovative commercial solutions to this urgent issue. They were guided to develop products that adhere to the cradle-to-cradle concept, emphasising resource efficiency and minimising environmental impact by creating a closed-loop cycle where byproducts are reduced, repurposed, and recycled.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our Leader of High Potential Learners Mrs Amanda Cassegrain and Mr Shaun Ninness, Mr Ian Lutton, and Mr Matt Cato for their invaluable support in nurturing and honing the entrepreneurial skills of our Year 10 students. Additionally, we would like to express our appreciation to the panel of judges who generously dedicated their time, expertise, and guidance to our students: Liesa Davies, Business Development Manager at the Department of Regional NSW; Dr. Angela Frimberger, veterinary oncologist and climate awareness advocate; and Mr. Matt Cato, Leader of Pedagogy at SJRC.
The presentation night filled us with immense pride as we witnessed the students' enthusiasm and sense of accomplishment. The judges faced a difficult task in selecting the winners from a highly competitive field, and after careful deliberation, they announced 'East Oasis' as the deserving champions. Congratulations to team members Grace Field, Gideon Marr-Grogan, Audrey Cassegrain, Lilah Hawkins, and Brooke Instrell for their remarkable achievement.
We would also like to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of the runners-up, team 'Recovered,' composed of Brennan Coreless-Brown, Charli Paine, Lily Maher, Kieran Copeland, and Joshua Kobelke. Their innovative ideas and dedication were truly commendable.
Furthermore, we must recognise the outstanding presentation skills demonstrated by the following teams:
- BioBlend Fuels: Grace Keena, Jacob Hill, Hriday Thakrani, Khussh Sachan, and Kate Ainsworth
- TPEP: Alissa Ostler, Eleanor Bennett-Tonkin, Lily Fraser, and Matilda Shields
- NewForm: Max Cole, Ashton Cooper, Jasmyn Barbuto, and Tyce Lee
Once again, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the participants for their incredible accomplishments. Their unwavering commitment to addressing environmental challenges through entrepreneurial endeavours is truly inspiring. We look forward to witnessing their future success and contributions in creating a sustainable future for all.

Compass & Parent Partnership
Parent Partnership is greatly valued by us and research suggests that student outcomes are improved when a positive home-school partnership is established.
In the Tell Them From Me survey parents were asked to participate in during April and May, we asked you about the two-way communication with the College and how informed you feel. You said you want to be more informed about;
- your child's behaviour at school, whether positive or negative.
- your child's progress in school subjects.
- opportunities concerning your child's future.
- your child’s social and emotional development
With the introduction of COMPASS, we are confident we will be able to keep you more informed about those areas. The final preparations for the transition to the Compass platform are being completed and will be finished throughout the holidays. This is a reminder that the process for onboarding to Compass will be as follows;
Monday July 10:
SMS sent via your child’s school Compass Portal informing you that your unique username and password will be sent to your registered email address with the school.
The text message will contain two links;
1. A link to a document outlining how to download the Compass School Manager App and the best way to search for your school.
2. A link to a form to register for help in case you experience any difficulties logging onto the app. A representative from the Diocese of Lismore Compass Team will make contact to give you assistance.
We have included an example of a PDF document that you can view. This document details how you can, through the app, open in a browser to access further documents within your Compass portal.
Link to the document: Compass Details
If you require personal assistance or a tutorial on downloading and accessing the functions of Compass, on Wednesday 26th July (Week 2 Term 3) we are offering 2 options for parents.
- Staff will be available during the school day for face-to-face Compass information session
- We will be hosting a Parent Wine and Cheese night that evening from 6-8pm
Please join us!

Semester 1 Reports 7-11
Semester 1 reports for students in Years 7-11 are now available on the parent portal. These reports will provide a valuable insight into how your child has progressed throughout the first half of the academic year. The Semester 1 reports will contain three discrete pieces of information:
- Common Grade Scale for Year 7-10 and a ROSA grade for Year 11 reports. This is an A-E reporting scale
- Academic profile, which reports on the students' understanding of subject specific content and outcomes
- Learning behaviours, which relate to a student's work habits within each subject
These descriptors are common across all subjects studied.
The mid-point of the academic year is a great opportunity to assess how your child has performed over the course of the first six months of the year, celebrate successes and reset goals for the second half of the year.
Year 7-10 Award Ceremony
Owing to the Year 9 Coffs Harbour excursion during this week of term, the awards ceremony for Years 7-10 will occur on Wednesday 26th July (Term 3 Week 2) from 9.05 am until 10.05 am in the College Hall. Further information will be communicated to parents at the commencement of Term 3 regarding this awards ceremony. Finally, I wish all students a restful holidays and an opportunity to reset their energies for the second half of the year. To our Year 12 students, use these next two weeks to recharge your batteries and prepare for the Trial HSC exams commencing in Week 3. Ensure your notes are organised and any missing work is completed. As you enter this critical period, you can be comforted by the fact you are prepared as best as possible. We encourage you to continue to create these opportunities as you prepare to finish the final four months of your school education.

Year 9 Camp
As our first semester draws to a close I have once again been reminded of what dedicated and caring staff we have here at SJRC. A number of our staff this week took our Year 9 students to Coffs Harbour for their adventure-based camp. Staff at the Coffs Harbour Adventure Centre spoke glowingly of our students and commended them on their conduct and participation. A huge thank you must be extended to Mrs Claire Goldie for her significant work in leading the excursion with gratitude also extended to accompanying staff who make these memorable experiences possible for our students.

Attendance
All parents and students are reminded of the foundational role of strong school attendance to support student learning and wellbeing. Students are legally required to attend school every day until they are at least 17, or they are in a position to transition into an alternate learning pathway. As referenced in the graphic below, even infrequent days of non-attendance can lead to significant lost learning time over the span of a young person’s school life.

Tell Them From Me Survey
Thank you once again to all parents and carers who provided feedback in our Tell Them From Me survey. Below you will find some parent feedback from our open-ended questions:
- New facilities are great and teachers are great too. Well done.
- Administrative staff are helpful, professional and highly motivated to resolve queries in a timely manner for parents.
- School counsellor is so helpful. School working with parents & child for different sensory avenues to keep child less stressed & attending school. So grateful, thank you all!
- The staff are hard-working, caring, and committed as a whole. They have my child's best interests at heart.
- I appreciate the respectful ways teachers engage with our child - in the classroom, during PC and through various coordinators.
- Opportunities to meet with and share cultural experiences through school are important to us as an Aboriginal family, and this extends to learning about cultures beyond our own, too.
- Staff in the office are always helpful and kind during every contact.
We wish all families and students a restorative and joy-filled mid year break. I am looking forward to seeing all students back at school and participating in our Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 18th July.

NAIDOC Week Special Assembly
This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC week at the College. Activities started with our NAIDOC assembly on Monday which commenced with students from our Gathang Language group, who have been working with Aunty Rhonda, performing Acknowledgement of Country in Gathang language. We also had two special guests, Uncle Richard Campbell & Aunty Louise Campbell who were interviewed by our students and I and gave us an insight into their experiences and educated us with their many stories.
Uncle Richard, is a Gumbaynggirr-Dunghutti and Walbunja man and survivor of the Stolen Generations. He earned a degree in Fine Arts and is now an internationally recognised artist who mentors young Aboriginal artists. Richard’s Christ-centred spirituality has been a source of restoration too; he grew up Catholic before being stolen from his parents, and now gains great strength from the stories of the Bible. He has found healing through brotherhood with his childhood mates, through the Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation. His current focus is on helping future generations to learn what really happened to Aboriginal people. While Aunty Louise, is a Gumbaynggirr-Dhungutti, Yuin Walbunja woman who was also stolen from her family with Uncle Richard in the 1960s. She currently works for the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle as an Education officer for Aboriginal Education. Aunty Louise has multiple university degrees related to education. She developed a strong sense of social justice working with disadvantaged Aboriginal people, overseeing land and environmental issues, advocating within the criminal system and working with young Aboriginal people. Aunty Louise is also passionate about promoting awareness of the Aboriginal story and its links with the Christian story. It was great to see parents come along to see the student led assembly. The assembly finished with a BBQ with our families, Elders, students, and staff.

Street Retreat
From Thursday to Sunday, I had the absolute pleasure of taking six Year 11 students to Brisbane for Street Retreat. This is an annual discipleship event where students from the Lismore Diocese high schools get an intimate look at how people who are homeless, refugees or otherwise marginalised live day-to-day in the Brisbane area. The experience involved working alongside ministries and outreach organisations in delivering their services to communities across the metropolitan area.In pairs, students were sent off to various sites around Brisbane. We engaged in a wide range of activities, some of which were:
- Rosies Mission Vans - an initiative of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (Order of Priests); serving warm drinks and food at a number of venues from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast.
- Andy’s Place - a ministry of St Andrew’s Uniting Church; cooking and serving meals to 90 men and women who are homeless - sleeping rough or in hostels and boarding houses.
- Street Level - a Salvation Army drop-in centre; serving meals, sharing fellowship and engaging in prayer.
- St Vincent de Paul Society - a lay Catholic organisation; sorting clothing for the op shops, repurposing old clothing and hosting a Vinnies Buddies Day for underprivileged children.
- Emmanuel City Mission - a grassroots Catholic ministry devoted to journeying with the most vulnerable in society; supporting a drop-in centre in preparing food for its patrons.
- Catholic Earthcare Australia - an agency of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference; collecting litter, planting native trees and removing weeds from nature reserves.
There were many other ministries that students engaged with over the four days. Each day consisted of attending ministries, de-briefing in small and large groups and closing with prayer. Our students were outstanding ambassadors for our College and they each demonstrated a real heart of service. There will be an opportunity for them to share their experience both at an assembly and through our newsletter and social media, so stay tuned!

Community Service at SJRC
"We are the hands and feet of Jesus"
Semester 1 awards are not too far away - presentations will occur on Wednesday 25th July at the normal College Assembly time.
Community Service is freely giving of our time to help others on a regular basis but there are many one-off opportunities that are offered through our college as well. Students this year have volunteered at Ironman 2023, at the ANZAC Day services, and at Parish Masses. Students may have also volunteered with Surf Life Saving, SES, RFS, with other church groups. We encourage students to look at their student diaries on pages 6A and 7A for other ideas.
Students should access the Community Service form on the College Moodle Page to have their community service hours formally recognised. Ten verified hours constitute a community service award.
Students need to have completed the form by Thursday, 20th July 2023 at 3:15 pm.

NAIDOC Week
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country. This week at the College we celebrated with a fun filled week of activities following our special NAIDOC Week assembly on Monday.
Some of the activities students have been involved in include Dreamtime Story telling in the Yarning Circle where students got to listen to Mrs McLeod and Josh Wright tell a variety of dreamtime stories and have a sing-a-long, Patty Mills 3 point shoot out where a lot of talent was on show, and some excellent creative activities in the library. We look forward to seeing our students participate in the wide range of activities that are available in the community during the first week of the holidays.

Please see the flyers below for information on local activities you and the whole family can join in on during the school holidays.

For the first 5 weeks of the term, all year 7 students have been studying the unit, Change in their PDHPE classes. This unit explores all of the physical and emotional changes young teens will experience as they move through puberty. The unit culminated in students creating a Puberty Survival Kit for both boys and girls aimed to assist teens with the changes their bodies are going through.

The Year 7 PDHPE team have also reached out to U by Kotex. U by Kotex is a company that produces a range of products for period protection. D&C Global Games in Hawaii - Cheerleading Silver Champions
Last month Year 10 student Natalija Kos and Year 8 students Bonnie Russell and Scout Hodgson were lucky enough to be part of a team of 13 athletes competing in a Cheerleading team with First State Allstars at the D+C Global Games in Hawaii.
The D+C Global Games is an annual invitational event and featured teams from the United States, Canada, Korea, New Zealand and Australia. Spanning 4 days, the event featured an opening ceremony, two days of competition (where all athletes competed both days) – a closing ceremony/awards ceremony and a celebratory Luau.
After 9 months of training, displaying plenty of grit and mental toughness to overcome injuries, the girls did themselves proud. Sitting in 3rd place after day one of competition (worth 30% of the overall score) they pulled something spectacular out of the hat for day two (worth 70% of the overall score) and they tumbled, stunted, jumped and danced their way to the silver medal, in the highly competitive Senior Coed, Level 3 division.
Such an amazing experience for the girls training in US Cheer gyms, stunting on palm-tree lined beaches, staying at the hotel with Cheerleaders from around the world making lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. They capped off an already incredible experience soaking up the sun, sand, and waves and the best of Hawaiian culture, swimming with turtles, surfing, snorkelling at Hanauma Bay, visiting Pearl Harbour, Waimea Bay, Waimea Falls, Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Diamond Head and more.
Congratulations on an outstanding effort in your first ever international competition ladies, let’s hope it won’t be your last one.

For that reason some of the events are run at the end of Term 2 – they are listed below. All high jump events require parents to provide permission on the official form. All events are optional. Points accumulated will count towards age champion tallies.
All Year 7 students will be provided with Fosbury Flop (high jump) tuition during sport classes so they are prepared for their high jump event if they choose to enter.
