Communication

That's a wrap for 2023, and what a BIG week we have had to finish the term off.

This week's newsletter features an overview of the 2023 Year 7-10 Academic and Service and Spirit Ceremonies. I thank Mr Ian Lutton, Assistant Principal-Learning & Teaching Ms Anne Marchment, Leader of Curriculum,  and our wonderful office staff for their organisation of these ceremonies.

Christmas_Mass_131223_72_.JPGOn Wednesday, we held our Thanksgiving Christmas Mass. This was a chance for both staff and students to reflect and give thanks for the many opportunities here at St Joseph's Regional College.  Thank you to Mr Shane Hyland, Leader of Evangelisation, Youth Ministry Offices, Emily Burg and Mrs Julie Hickling for their organisation of the Christmas Mass on Wednesday.

After mass, we announced our 2024 Year 8-10 Student Leaders of Mission, Stewardship and Wellbeing along with our Junior PC Leaders. Thank you to our Senior Student leaders who lead the induction process and I congratulate all students who were presented with their badge. I look forward to seeing these students grow and develop in their leadership roles. I thank Mr Matthew Bushe, Assistant Principal, Mission and Mrs Jacqui Crilley, Leader of Pastoral Care Programs, for her organisation of our newly appointed leaders. We will feature our newly appointed junior leaders in the first 2024 newsletter.

The Junior Sports Awards was also held on Wednesday, and I congratulate all students on a successful year in sport. I thank Mr Damien Kelly, Leader of Sport, for the way he goes about calmly organising all things sport.

I congratulate Year 12 2023 on the fantastic HSC and ATAR results released on Thursday, 14th December. Our Year 12 cohort was invited back to the College on Thursday for a celebration breakfast in honour of their hard work, and it was also an opportunity to gather with their peers one final time. A special newsletter with an overview of results is being prepared for families and will be emailed out as soon as possible. Thank you to Mr Ian Lutton, Assistant Principal, Learning & Teaching, Ms Anne Marchment, Leader of Curriculum and Ms Heidi Flanagan, Leader of Student Wellbeing, for facilitating the Year 12 results morning.

At the Year 7-10 Award Ceremony, I addressed our College community and would like to share this with you.

On behalf of the St Joseph’s Regional College community, I would like to congratulate the wonderful contributions our students have made in this year of ‘Justice’.
I commend our staff and our students who have shown a continued commitment to our changing school environment as we return to pre-covid routines.

I particularly would like to acknowledge our 2023 Junior Pastoral Care Leaders. While there are too many to name individually, the names of the students invested into this significant role are displayed on the screens on either side of the stage. These young leaders have done an exceptional job and should be justifiably proud of your efforts this year. I thank Ms Hyde, Leader of Pastoral Care programs for coordinating the junior leaders and supporting them throughout the year.

Mr Cato’s dedication, sense of humour and soccer coaching prowess will be missed.

On Wednesday this week, after our Christmas Mass, we farewelled our departing staff and we wished them all the best for the future. Be assured of our St Joseph’s Regional College blessings.

The trainees moving on to the next phases of their lives are Makayla Steele,
Jonah Garven, and Amahli Kennedy: Thank you for your energy and enthusiasm.

I would like to extend best wishes to the parents of our Year 10 families, to those families who will see their sons and daughters embark on a new educational journey at Newman Senior Technical College in 2024, and also to other students who are leaving us to pursue other ventures. Thank you for your loyalty and support for our wonderful College, and we wish you well in the future.

On behalf of the College community, I once again thank you for being part of our family and extend my warm congratulations to our award winners at this ceremony and our Service and Spirit Award ceremony to follow.

I wish you all a very safe, holy and joyful Christmas season.

A Christmas Prayer

“May the blessing of joy abide within you;
May the blessing of peace rest upon you;
May the blessing of love flow out through you;
May all the blessings of the Lord be yours at Christmas and in the new year.” —

Christmas Mass

Christmas_Mass_131223_2_.jpgOur End of Year Thanksgiving Mass was held in our College Hall on Wednesday morning. Fr Paul Gooley our Parish Priest, celebrated Mass and many students from Years 7-11 assisted by reading, carrying gifts, and altar serving. Ministry students and our some of our student leaders of Mission created a Nativity Scene at the beginning of Mass which helped us focus on the reason that we celebrate Christmas. Our Music students, ably led through many rehearsals by Mrs Leanne Johnson, Ms Sarina McNamara and Jonah Garven, provided the music for the Mass. The quality of their work helped us to enter into a wonderful time of prayer and thanksgiving.

The first reading was from the Prophet Isaiah who foretold the birth of a child who would be called ‘Emmanuel” or “God is with us”. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel tells the story of this prophecy coming to fulfilment, with Mary bearing a child even though she had not been with her betrothed, Joseph. Fr Paul spoke about the true and original meaning of the word “Christmas” as being from the Engish Old English Cristes-messe, literally meaning Christ's Mass. He used the idea of Christmas wrapping which we all buy and use but is tossed away soon after the unwrapping. It is such a popular item during the season but in the end is fairly superfluous compared to what is wrapped and who it is given to. This is the same with all of the Christmassy things we do. Without the true reason for the season, the birth of Jesus Christ, little else matters.

So as we give each other gifts and wish each other Merry Christmas, may we all reflect on the real meaning of this celebration and be thankful for our many blessings and pass on the love of Christ that Jesus modelled for us to those less fortunate than us this Christmas.

Hannah Thompson and Kallin Furlong spoke on behalf of Year 10 with a message of farewell and sharing some memories. They also acknowledged the Year 10 students who will be moving on to Newman and other pathways for 2024. Fr Paul then prayed a blessing over our Year 10 students.

As research now confirms , we recognise that our tutor and band program is the backbone for student success not only in music but in other areas of education, leadership and well-being. To all our hardworking and talented team of tutors we say a huge thankyou.

To our trainees Jonah Garven and Makayla Steele we wish them the very best for their future studies in the Arts : Jonah studying music at Griffith University and Makayla following her love for Arts at Armidale.

None of this program would have been possible without the College executive support for our guru Co-curricular Leader, Mrs Sharon Green, who has conducted, managed and cared for the 120+ students in the music program.

And as I say farewell to the College community in my role, a huge thankyou also to my passionate classroom teacher colleagues of 2023,

  • Mrs Sarina Macnamara
  • Mrs Emily Young
  • Mrs Debbie Kennaugh.

May 2024 be another rich year of music making!

Kindly,

Mrs Leanne Johnson

This week, we celebrated four of our 2023 Year 12 students who are recipients of the Hastings Education Fund Commencement Grants.

Congratulations to Harrison Brown, Molly Cicak, Siena Cooper and Jeffrey Keena. In addition, two former students, Tai Khan and Matthew Gleeson were presented with 'Continuing Scholarships' as they forge ahead in their chosen courses.

Over the years, students from St Joseph's Regional College have benefited hugely from the generosity of the Hastings Education Fund and its growing band of local and community sponsors and supporters. As a College community, we are immensely grateful for this level of encouragement and support, and we extend heartfelt thanks to all who enable this amazing initiative. Well done all.

This week's Alumni is Paige Everingham of the Class of 2019

Paige is a newly qualified zookeeper. After selecting a course of study, and completing a few years of that, Paige recognised that she needed to pivot and pursue her true passion - that of animal health. So 2023 finds her working with amazing sealife at Sea World - seals, penguins, polar bears and dolphins. She is preparing to take up studies in a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology degree course in 2024, and November next year also sees her marriage. Well done Paige!

2024 School Travel Applications are Now Open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2024 can apply HERE. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting additional travel entitlement because of new shared parental arrangement (e.g. joint custody).

Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of Term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2024 school year. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send them an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2024.

Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Travel from Term 1 2024

We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card (within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start of the school year.

Applications for 2024 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel open at the start of Term 4 2023, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.

Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year.

The start of the year is a busy period for local transport operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations difficult.

We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.
