SJRC Newsletter: Term 2 Week 2 - 9th May 2025

Year 7 2026

Yr7_Informaion_Evening_050525_1_.jpegOn Monday evening, we had the pleasure of opening our College to prospective families interested in enrolling in our Year 7 2026 cohort. The event was a resounding success, showcasing our vibrant learning environment, exceptional facilities, and our school community's warm, welcoming culture.

I would like to thank our dedicated staff for their collective effort in making this event successful. From the beautifully presented classrooms and engaging learning spaces to the captivating music that filled the air, every detail contributed to an impressive experience.

To our passionate teachers and College Leaders, thank you for warmly welcoming families and showcasing our College's excellence. Your enthusiasm and commitment were evident, and our visiting families greatly appreciated the opportunity to see our College in action.

A special thank you to Mrs Michelle Reynolds, Principal's Assistant - Student Services, for her countless hours of preparation and support to families throughout the enrolment process. Her dedication ensured that the event ran smoothly.

Finally, a special mention to our amazing student tour guides. Your pride in your school and your ability to engage and inspire our guests made a lasting impression.

Thank you once again to everyone involved. Together, we continue to make our College a place of excellence and opportunity.

Happy 3rd Birthday Madge!

Madge was treated with extra pats and love on her 3rd birthday yesterday. Madge is our College Support Dog, she is a female Labradoodle who is loved by all here at the College. Madge's mum is our College Counsellor, Ms Kylie Wallis but we also have another three dedicated staff handlers, Ms Donna Hamlin, Mrs Janine Handley and Mrs Leanne Tinsey, one of whom will be with Madge at all times.

Madge can be seen out and about in the playground at recess and lunch, and greeting students at the start of the day. Madge assists students in addressing attendance issues, social and emotional learning and reading programs within the school.

Madge is fully qualified, but requires recertification each year, with her next exam in August. We thank students Eliza Crombie and Cooper Clay, who are involved in her training program.

Prohibited Weapons

Prohibited_weapons.JPG

As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors within all our schools, we want to remind families of the importance of following our school policies and procedures regarding prohibited weapons.

Prohibited weapons include all knives and blades, (with the exception of those required for school lessons), firearms, gel blasters/gel guns, 3D printed guns, slingshot, darts, batons, machetes, laser pointers, or similar articles and anything else that can be used as a weapon to intimidate or cause serious injury or harm, e.g., a screwdriver, chisel or hammer.

Possessing any weapon, whether real or imitation, is unlawful in any school setting and can result in both criminal charges and disciplinary action under our Student Suspension, Expulsion, and Exclusion Policy.

We ask all parents and caregivers to speak openly with their child about safety, responsibility, and respect for others. In Catholic education, we are guided by the belief that every person is made in the image of God, and we are called to safeguard their dignity. Your cooperation in upholding these expectations helps create a community of care, justice, and compassion.

Thank you for your support and commitment to a safe and faith-filled learning environment.

Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 16th May!

Your child is never too old for a reminder about pedestrian road safety. On May 16th, National Walk Safely to School Day, we encourage you to reinforce the importance of staying alert while walking.

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when stepping off the curb, particularly if they are distracted by music or phones. Devices can reduce hearing, concentration, and reaction time. When exiting the bus, remind your young person to wait until the bus has moved away before crossing the road, as this ensures they have a clear view of oncoming traffic.

Please take a moment to discuss safe walking habits with your young person to help keep them alert and aware. Help them identify the safest places to cross the road when travelling to and from school. Teach your young person to avoid any distractions that could compromise their safety.

For more information, go to Transport NSW On The Move.

St Joseph the Worker Feast Day

A Day of Faith, Talent, and Community: Celebrating St Joseph the Worker
Friday saw our College community come together in a vibrant celebration of our Patron Saint, St Joseph the Worker (whose actual Feast Day is 1st May each year). The day was a resounding success, filled with moments of reflection, dazzling talent, and a palpable sense of unity that truly embodies the spirit of St Joseph's Regional College.

The day commenced with a special Mass, presided over by Fr Prodencio. We were particularly blessed to hear a thoughtful and inspiring homily delivered by our very own Deacon Shane, which resonated deeply with the entire congregation. The reverence and participation during the Mass were a beautiful testament to our faith. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Deacon Shane, Emily, and all the students who contributed to the smooth and meaningful preparation of the liturgy. We also sincerely thank Mrs Michelle Redman for her dedication in preparing our talented student musicians, whose contributions enriched our worship experience.

Following the spiritual nourishment of the Mass, the College was treated to another spectacular Talent Quest, expertly presented by Mrs Jensen and our incredibly gifted students. Mrs Jensen and Mrs Philpott prepared students. The performances showcased a diverse range of skills, from musical artistry to captivating displays of athleticism and creativity. The energy in the hall was electric, and the enthusiastic support from the audience highlighted the positive and encouraging atmosphere that defines our school. A special thank you to the dedicated staff members who took on the challenging task of judging the impressive array of talent.

The spirit of friendly competition and collaboration continued throughout the day as PC groups engaged in lively rounds of Trivia and a creatively challenging Newspaper fashion competition, Crest design activity and posing for a creative PC photo. The ingenuity and teamwork displayed were fantastic to witness, and the laughter echoing through the classrooms was infectious. Adding to the festive atmosphere, one student from each PC donned a paper costume, each thoughtfully capturing the essence of our College Patrons.

A significant element of the day was the PC group shared lunches, fostering connection and camaraderie within each pastoral care community. The positive vibe across the school was truly exemplary, showcasing the strong sense of belonging that makes St Joseph's Regional College so special. A huge thank you must go to our dedicated PC teachers for their tireless efforts in organising their groups, nurturing a positive atmosphere, and facilitating the various activities throughout the day. Their commitment is invaluable to the fabric of our College.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to Breeanna Stone and the staff from the TAS department who generously prepared lunch for the majority of our students, ensuring everyone was well-catered for throughout the day's celebrations. To all the leaders, both staff and students, who provided essential support with resources and logistics, thank you for your invaluable contributions that helped the day run so smoothly.

A particularly heartwarming aspect of the day was Mrs Hempsell's PC group hosting our special guests from the local Aged Care facility, who joined us for the Mass. This act of community outreach beautifully exemplified our College values of compassion and respect.

The St Joseph the Worker Feast Day was a resounding success, a testament to the strong faith, incredible talent, and unwavering community spirit that thrives within St Joseph's Regional College. It was a day where we truly lived out who we are, together.

Please keep these groups in your prayers

  • Journey into the Faith for Teens
This year, we pray for five of our students who have embarked this week on their journey into the faith as they prepare to be Baptised or welcomed into the Catholic Church in Term 3. Our Parish Youth Coordinator, Zac Parnell has begun weekly preparation sessions where these students take a deep dive into Catholic Church teachings and beliefs.
  • Year 12 Retreat
We pray for the students and staff who are heading to Francis Retreat centre for what is always a major highlight of the Year 12 experience. This is a time for Year 12 to take a step back for a few days to reflect on their journey so far and look ahead to the next steps. They will engage in engaging opportunities to grow closer as a group, affirming each other and making joyful memories that they will be able to talk about for years to come. For those parents and carers who have not experienced something like this, it is worth noting that in ten years' time, when our students look to have a reunion, this is one of those events that they will reminisce on.
  • The Conclave
As the cardinals gather in conclave to discern a new Shepherd for the Catholic Church, we as a Church pray:

Holy Spirit, enlighten the Church at this time, especially all the cardinals you call to take part in the conclave. Grant them wisdom and holiness so that all may cooperate with your inspiration and guidance to elect the next Vicar of Christ, your chosen servant. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Welcome to the family, Mr McLeod

George McLeod.pngWe have some truly wonderful news to share from the Easter Vigil Mass. Our Catholic Studies teacher, Mr George McLeod, who has been learning and growing through the Journey into the Faith program over the past many months, was joyfully welcomed into the Church through Baptism.

The privilege of our very own Deacon Shane Baptising George made this occasion even more special. This beautiful ceremony, held during one of the most reverent and significant liturgies of the Church year, was a powerful testament to George's faith journey and the welcoming spirit of our Parish community.

Please join me in extending our warmest congratulations to George as he begins this new chapter in his life. We also express our sincere gratitude to Deacon Shane for his dedicated ministry. It is very special that one colleague can baptise another!

Interfaith Evening

CSU_Interfaith_Evening_080525_3_.jpg

On Thursday evening, a number of staff and students from our College attended the Interfaith Evening at Charles Sturt University (CSU), an insightful event focused on the pressing issue of climate change. The evening provided an opportunity to hear from distinguished guest speakers representing various faith traditions, each sharing their perspectives on the climate crisis.

The evening offered valuable insights directly aligned with our senior students' coursework, fostering a deeper understanding of how different faiths approach global challenges like climate change.

The event featured three respected speakers:

  • Rev Professor Jione Havea – A CSU Research Professor and a leading voice in climate action for the Uniting Church.
  • Professor Mehmet Ozalp – Head of the School of Islamic Studies at CSU, providing insights from an Islamic perspective.
  • Dr Kashmira Dave – A renowned Sanskrit scholar from the United Nations, offering perspectives rooted in ancient wisdom.

This Interfaith Evening not only highlighted the intersection of faith and environmental responsibility but also inspired meaningful conversations among our students, encouraging them to become more informed and engaged global citizens.

Year 9 2026 Information Evening – Diversifying Learning Pathways

We warmly invite all Year 8 students and their families to attend our Year 9 Information Evening on Monday 2nd June in the College Hall commencing at 6.00 pm This important event will provide valuable insights into the changes we are making to elective subjects available for Year 9 2026 and how these choices can influence each student’s learning journey through to senior secondary school.

As students move into Year 9, they have the opportunity to personalise their own learning and choose a pattern of study that is unique to their interests. The new elective short courses offer an exciting opportunity to explore these interests, develop new skills, and begin tailoring their education to suit potential career aspirations.

During the evening, we will outline the changes we are making to the traditional elective courses offered across Years 9 and 10 as we move to an expanded range of short course offerings in Year 9 and an expanded range of elective offerings in Year 10.

The evening will also provide an overview of educational pathways leading into Year 11 and 12, specifically focusing on the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), including ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) pathways for university, and alternate options such as school-based apprenticeships, traineeships, and VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses.

We strongly encourage all families to attend and partner with us, as this evening marks a key milestone in each student’s educational journey.

Social Media

This week, all Year 7 parents were contacted following a year group meeting with Year 7 students. These points of contact occurred after an increase in the volume and intensity of social media conflict between Year 7 students that has required a school-based response. Parents and students have now been advised of the following points:

  • In Years 7 - 10, mobile phone use of any kind is banned from the moment students enter school gates until 3.15pm.
  • 13 is the legal age for Snapchat, Tiktok and other social media platforms. In September, the legal age will be elevated to 16 under new legislation.
  • Snapchat use is banned at school during school hours.
  • Recording and photographing using mobile phones or other devices should not be occurring at school.
  • It is a breach of the Digital Technologies User Agreement to install a VPN on a student device.
  • If a peer blocks or unfriends another peer on a social media platform, social media contact between those two peers should immediately cease; the blocked person should not take the conflict into a different group chat.
  • Sexist, racist or otherwise offensive or harassing interactions between students - including on social media platforms outside school - will result in school-based consequences as part of the school’s duty of care when these issues are drawn to our attention.

We are exploring options for school-based parent education and support regarding young people and social media. Please keep an eye on the newsletter for updates. In the meantime, we recommend the Office of the eSafety Commissioner as an excellent starting point for parents seeking insight about how to best manage, monitor and supervise their child’s social media use.

Uniform Reminders

For all Year 7-10 students, the older style uniform (including the previous tracksuits) are now phased out following the four-year transition period.

Tell Them From Me

TTFM_logo.png

Next week will see the launch of our 2025 Tell Them From Me Survey for parents, students and staff. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our valued school community members think about school life and will inform our school improvement focus. During Week 4, all students will be given the opportunity and time to participate in this survey during regular school hours. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish them to. This week, information was sent home to parents with an “opt out” Google Form to complete if you do not wish your child to complete the survey.

We will also be distributing a survey for parents and carers via the TTFM platform, which will be available for completion from Monday, 12th May. We encourage all parents to please complete the survey so we can best improve our practice to align with the needs of our families. Please keep an eye on your inbox next week for the survey link.
