SJRC Newsletter: Term 2 Week 4- 23rd May 2025

Our hearts go out to everyone in our local community who has been affected by the recent flooding. The images and stories of homes damaged and lives disrupted have deeply saddened us all. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you, who are grappling with the aftermath of this event.

We want to express our profound gratitude to all those who have worked tirelessly to assist victims during this challenging time. In particular, we extend our deepest appreciation to our incredible emergency services personnel who have demonstrated extraordinary courage, dedication, and selflessness. Their efforts have been truly remarkable.

As a College community that is an extension of St Agnes' Catholic Parish community, we stand ready to offer our support in any way we can. If you or your family are in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to the College. We are here for you during this trying season.

We look forward to welcoming students back for Week 5.

A Prayer in the Spirit of Nano Nagle:

God of compassion, we give thanks for the unwavering spirit of those who offer comfort and aid in times of struggle. May your grace strengthen all who are recovering from the recent floods, and inspire us to be instruments of your love and care, just as Nano Nagle reached out to those in need. Amen.

Year 12 Retreat - Bonny Hills

The recent three-day Year 12 Retreat at Bonny Hills was a truly memorable and transformative experience for all involved. I like to start by thanking Ms Flanagan, our Year 12 Leader of Wellbeing, for her retreat organisation. It was amazing, thank you!

Day 1 began with team-building activities, trust exercises, and meaningful discussions focused on hopes and fears for the future. It was a powerful and heartfelt start to the retreat, laying the foundation for deeper connections among students.

Day 2 invited self-reflection and gratitude, particularly for the significant people in our lives. Between thoughtful conversations and plenty of delicious food, students also enjoyed a range of activities—Just Dance, board games, and ping pong brought out their competitive spirit, while the evening’s dress-up parade delivered plenty of laughter and lasting memories.

Day 3 concluded the retreat on a high note, with a beautiful and moving student-led liturgy. Every student played a part, contributing to a sense of unity and shared purpose.

We returned home tired, but with full hearts. The students left Bonny Hills stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the journey ahead. Witnessing their growth and togetherness throughout the three days was a privilege.

A sincere thank you to the dedicated staff who gave up time with their own families to support our students on this retreat. Your guidance, care, and commitment are deeply appreciated.

Year 9 2026 Information Evening – Diversifying Learning Pathways

We warmly invite all Year 8 students and their families to attend our Year 9 Information Evening on Monday 2nd June in the College Hall commencing at 6.00 pm This important event will provide valuable insights into the changes we are making to elective subjects available for Year 9 2026 and how these choices can influence each student’s learning journey through to senior secondary school.

As students move into Year 9, they have the opportunity to personalise their own learning and choose a pattern of study that is unique to their interests. The new elective short courses offer an exciting opportunity to explore these interests, develop new skills, and begin tailoring their education to suit potential career aspirations.

During the evening, we will outline the changes we are making to the traditional elective courses offered across Years 9 and 10 as we move to an expanded range of short course offerings in Year 9 and an expanded range of elective offerings in Year 10.

The evening will also provide an overview of educational pathways leading into Year 11 and 12, specifically focusing on the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), including ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) pathways for university, and alternate options such as school-based apprenticeships, traineeships, and VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses.

We strongly encourage all families to attend and partner with us, as this evening marks a key milestone in each student’s educational journey.

We are very aware that many of our families may be experiencing hardship at this time due to the recent weather events. This week, members of our Student Wellbeing Team have reached out to individual families we believe may have been evacuated or isolated. However, we are conscious that we are not informed of each family’s unique situation. Should your family require immediate or ongoing support, our Family Connect In Schools (FCIS) Service may be able to provide assistance. Families can self-refer to this service by contacting FCIS worker Jasmine using the details in the flyer attached. We encourage all families to please let us know if your family is experiencing hardship following the floods.

Family_Connect_Services.png

Headspace.pngThe Headspace resources for disaster recovery may be a useful starting point for teenagers and young people who the recent flood event has impacted. Returning to school after this unexpected period of absence may also be challenging for some young people, particularly if they are concerned about what may be happening at home. If we can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Leader of Student Wellbeing or the College Office, who will direct your call.

Tell Them From Me

TTFM_logo.png
The 2025 Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey for parents, students, and staff will provide valuable feedback on what our valued school community members think about school life and will inform our school improvement focus.

All families have now received the survey for parents and carers via the TTFM platform, which is available for completion. We encourage all parents to complete the survey so we can continue to improve our practices to better align with the needs of our families. Please keep an eye on your inbox next week for the survey link.

During Week 5, all students will be given the opportunity and time to participate in this survey during regular school hours. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Opt-Out Option: You may 'opt-out' of taking part in the survey. If either you or your child chooses to 'opt-out', please email me at: jennifer.furney@lism.catholic.edu.au

Online 27 May 12.30 - 1.15 pm

esafety_logo.JPG

For boys and young men, the internet can be a place where they seek connection, validation and guidance as they explore what it means to be a man today. However, it also exposes them to risks like concerning content, online exploitation and the growing influence of harmful ideologies.

This free webinar will help parents understand:

  • Social and cultural influences shaping boys and young men.
  • How boys engage online, build relationships and how they may be vulnerable to manipulation or exploitation.
  • The impact of social media, gaming, and influencers on their attitudes, behaviours and sense of identity.
  • Practical strategies to build critical thinking, challenge harmful narratives, and create open conversations that empower boys and young men to navigate the online world safely and respectfully.

Register for this webinar here.

Ubuntu African Choir Visit

COLOUR_MY_WORLD_LOGO.jpg

The African Children's Choir Returns to Port Macquarie!

We are excited to welcome 14 Ugandan UBUNTU AFRICA friends to our College in Week 5.

Fourteen inspiring African Children's Choir graduates embark on an unforgettable eight-week tour along Australia’s eastern coast every two years. They raise vital funds for the education of underprivileged children in Uganda, and with each performance, they share their stories and vibrant culture.

These 14 young people are gifted singers, musicians and dancers who were part of the globally acclaimed African Children’s Choir. We actually hosted the children in 2015. These young people have recently graduated from High School through the sponsorship of the African Children’s Choir and are ready to make a significant impact back in their villages in Uganda. As they gear up for university, they are excited to share with us how their dreams have been realised through this inspirational tour. Their Australian Tour is titled “Colour My World”.

Our Drumline and Choir will also be participating in a Masterclass workshop with the group while they are here which is very exciting.

Where can I see them?

Everyone has the opportunity to attend a concert at the Glasshouse on Thursday, 29th May, where they will bring a dynamic performance to our local community, featuring our College performers also.

Book your tickets now and be part of something truly special!  Glasshouse Tickets

The Mid Coast Career Market was a fun, interactive, hands-on Expo for Year 10, held at the Race Course on Tuesday, 13th May 2025.

Year 10 students were able to discuss their career options with local businesses, industry representatives and training providers and receive up-to-the-minute, relevant information. Talking to people who already work in their field of interest enabled Year 10 to learn about training and study pathways first-hand. They found out what types of positions are available, how to get them and which growth areas can provide sustainable employment.

Students also had the opportunity to interact with support services with the capabilities to foster and guide them in their quest for their chosen career. All exhibitors encouraged students to be involved by their highly interactive and entertaining displays, contributing to the day's fun and energetic atmosphere and success.

Year 10 are to be congratulated on their exemplary behaviour, and I was very proud to be involved with Year 10, who were wonderful representatives of SJRC.
Many thanks to Mid Coast Connect for their brilliant organisation of the day – the many hours of organisation were evident in the smooth running of the Expo.

Caitlin Moore - Class of 2020

After completing her HSC at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2020, Caitlin commenced a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography) at Charles Sturt University (Port Macquarie campus), and in 2024 commenced a 33-week radiography residency at a hospital. Caitlin loves working in a multi-disciplinary team with other healthcare professionals in caring for patients. Diocesan Tennis Championships

The Diocesan Tennis Championships were held on Tuesday, the 14th May.  They were played at Lismore Tennis Club.  Congratulations to our Open Girls team, who were the overall winners on the day!

The team has qualified for the CCC Championships in Bathurst in September.

The following wrap was provided by Mrs Winters.
Congratulations to the SJRC Tennis team, who recently competed at the Diocesan Tennis championships, held in Lismore on Wednesday. Meet the team: Henry Warren, Toby Thomas, Abbie Hudson, Gabby Zeeman, Angie Zeeman and Paige Hudson.

This was a doubles team event; all SJRC teams shone throughout the day. Students demonstrated exceptional skill and talent on the court, with many exciting rallies, net plays, aces, teamwork, and communication skills on display. All students are to be congratulated on their outstanding sportsmanship and school spirit, and for representing St Joseph’s Regional College with pride.

The Junior boys’ team was strong and consistent, and fought hard, winning an impressive 5 from the 7 matches they played. The Open girls A and B teams dominated throughout the day, both teams winning 4 from 4 matches, and going through the day undefeated.

Congratulations to the two Open girls teams who won the day with a combined score and will now progress to the CCC School Teams Tennis Championships to be held in Bathurst in September. Congratulations to all students for your outstanding effort, participation and exceptional results.

Student testimonies of the Diocesan Championships, Wednesday 14/2/25.

Henry: Playing in Lismore was fun and was filled with lots of laughs but the best part was beating Mackillop.

Gabby: Going to Lismore was a really great experience, and was really fun to go with all the other team players. I’m super excited to go next year and hopefully take another medal home.

Angie: It was so much fun going to Lismore to represent St Joseph’s College in Tennis.

Toby: Although the courts were wet, it was a great experience meeting new people.

Paige: Being my last year, I was so excited when we were able to come through with the win. You can’t wipe the smile off my face # back-to-back.

Abbie: This experience was so enjoyable, and I can’t wait for the next level, and doing it all again next year.

Bill Turner Soccer - Round 2

In early May, the SJRC Girls Bill Turner Soccer team contested Round 2 of the statewide competition against MacKillop College. The game was forced to be played on the Hockey fields due to the relentless rain.

Our team started very strongly and dominated possesion for the entire match. Unfortunately neither team could find the back of the net in regular or extra time, pushing the match to penalties.

The girls won the shootout 3-2 which advances our team to Round .

Thank you to all our players and coach Miss Toms.
