SJRC News in Brief: Term 2 Week 5 - 30th May 2025

UBUNTU African Children's Choir

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Beckwith, Parker, Dy, Bi, Toohey and Gobius families in our College community who graciously opened their homes to host members of the Ugandan UBUNTU African Children's Choir. Your hospitality made a meaningful impact and helped create a memorable experience for both our guests and students. The visit was a beautiful celebration of culture, music and connection, and it would not have been possible without your generosity. Thank you for embodying the spirit of community and making this cultural exchange truly special!

During their stay, the UBUNTU Choir treated us to a powerful and inspiring performance at The Glasshouse, where their talent, energy and message of unity deeply moved the audience.

We were also honoured to welcome the choir to the College, where they led a musical workshop with our students. Through drumming, singing and dancing, our students experienced a vibrant cultural exchange that broadened their horizons and filled the College with joy and rhythm.

A special thank you goes to Sarah Butler, our dedicated Leader of Co-Curricular Music, for her incredible efforts in coordinating the event and supporting our students. We’re also extremely proud of our SAPSS Drumline and Choir members, whose enthusiastic participation and performances greatly added to this unforgettable experience.

Year 9 2026 Information Evening – Diversifying Learning Pathways

We warmly invite all Year 8 students and their families to attend our Year 9 Information Evening on Monday, 2nd June in the College Hall, commencing at 6.00 pm. This important event will provide valuable insights into the changes we are making to elective subjects available for Year 9 2026 and how these choices can influence each student’s learning journey through to senior secondary school.

As students move into Year 9, they have the opportunity to personalise their own learning and choose a pattern of study that is unique to their interests. The new elective short courses offer an exciting opportunity to explore these interests, develop new skills, and begin tailoring their education to suit potential career aspirations.

During the evening, we will outline the changes we are making to the traditional elective courses offered across Years 9 and 10 as we move to an expanded range of short course offerings in Year 9 and an expanded range of elective offerings in Year 10.

The evening will also provide an overview of educational pathways leading into Year 11 and 12, specifically focusing on the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), including ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) pathways for university, and alternate options such as school-based apprenticeships, traineeships, and VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses.

We strongly encourage all families to attend and partner with us, as this evening marks a key milestone in each student’s educational journey.

Workshop: How to prepare for the Trial HSC exams

Year 12 - On Wednesday, 2nd July, you will have two opportunities to assist you to be HSC and Uni Ready. During Food for Thought (3.30-5.00pm), you will access a workshop "How to prepare for the Trial HSC exams", including a delicious pizza refreshment. Then from 5.30-6.30pm, join your parents in the PAC for our annual 'Successful Transitions' Careers Information Night, covering all things post-HSC. This is a wonderful dual offering that ticks so many boxes. Keep this significant date free of other commitments.
