Year 11 Award Ceremony & Student Leadership Badge Presentation
Over the past week, I have had the pleasure of attending two Year 11 Ceremonies, where students were recognised for their academic and cultural achievements. We also acknowledged and inducted the remainder of our Year 11 leaders into their positions in the Student Leadership Team for 2021.
This group of students are now moving into their final year of education; commencing the Year 12 course this term. They are an exemplary group of young people and I was very proud to be able to present these awards to the recipients. Thank you to Ms Heidi O'Reilly for organising both of these Ceremonies with the assistance of Mrs Michelle Reynolds. I am sure all of the students and their parents appreciate all the work that goes into bringing ceremonies like this to fruition.
Photographs of both ceremonies follow in my article this week and are also available to view on our College Facebook page.
Student Leadership Team
Congratulations to the following students who were acknowledged and inducted into the Student Leadership Team.
These students make up the 31 members of our College Student Leadership team. They, along with our College Captains, Vice-Captains and House Captains attended a leadership formation day earlier this year. The Student Leadership team will work with all members of the college, both students and staff, to ensure that student voices are being heard, and we look forward to watching these fine young men and women lead with compassion and dedication. Congratulations to:

St Agnes' Catholic Parish Youth Award
The St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Youth Award recognises young people who are actively participating in ministry within St Agnes’ Parish. They are committed Catholics who seek to support the Parish’s vision and mission that ‘everything is to be oriented towards the praise and glory of God'. Throughout the year this young lady has demonstrated consistent and outstanding service to St Agnes’ Parish. She has been a witness to Christ and the values that are at the heart of our Parish and our College community as demonstrated by their integrity, sense of justice, and commitment to serving God and others. Her actions and thoughts make our community a better place.
The recipient of this award is an outstanding young lady with a deep sense of service. She is to be congratulated on her profound commitment to live out the Gospel message particularly through her devoted involvement within our parish community. This service is evidenced by her regular attendance at Mass, Encounter Youth Group, College masses and liturgies.
She can be seen Altar Serving, Reading and Commentating at St Agnes' Church and serving in the same capacity at masses and liturgies here at the College. She identifies the upcoming event, volunteers her time and skills, and rarely needs to be asked. She embodies the Mary MacKillop quote of “never seeing a need without doing something about it!”.
Congratulations to a very worthy recipient of the St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Youth Award: Sarah Jennings
St Joseph's Regional College Spirit Award

This year the honours go to Tamara Batty and Ella Smith

WEEK 4 COLLEGE ASSEMBLY
College Captains and Vice Captains Speeches
At this week's Zoom Assembly our newly elected 2021 College Captains and Vice Captains introduced themselves to the College Community. Please see their speeches below:
College Captain: Ella Handley

Hi everyone, I’m Ella Handley and I was elected as your College Captain for 2021. Firstly, I would like to say that I feel very honoured to have been given this opportunity and I aim to uphold this honour with a sense of pride and commitment for the remainder of this year and 2021.
I have been attending Regional College since the beginning of Year 7, so I have sat in the exact position you are in now, which I believe enables me to have a feeling of empathy with you all.
Whilst in this role I hope to safeguard the amazing legacy that the previous leadership teams have left, while striving to improve the cohesiveness of our wonderful school community. Unity and inclusiveness are of utmost importance to me and is one thing that I know this year’s leadership team will keep in mind for the year ahead.
In doing this we hope to create an even more cohesive school community where everyone feels involved and supported. We have a few things up our sleeve to achieve this.
I promise to lead you all with honesty and integrity. We have a wonderful College that supports us in all our endeavours. I hope to continue the great tradition of our previous captains and make this College an even better place. Please feel free to come and have a chat, I’d love to speak with you all!!!!
Thank you.
College Captain: Joseph Lewis
My name is Joe Lewis and I am proud to be your College Captain for the remainder of 2020 and moving into 2021. I have grown up attending St Agnes' Parish schools, from pre-school, all the way through to where I am standing today at this College. I began college life in 2016 and to use a cliche, it has been nothing short of a rollercoaster as I’m sure many of you are well aware. However, I am here to join you and assist in making this rollercoaster as enjoyable as possible as we embark on this coming year, knowing literally anything is possible after the trying 2020 we have collectively experienced.
As your leading student body, I want you to feel comfortable in my presence and feel as if I am, along with everyone in my cohort, a person to which you can come to and talk: to talk about your weekend, school work, maybe you just have a question you want to ask or even simply a smile on your way by in the corridors.
In my leadership over the next year or so, I ultimately aim to establish the most welcoming physical school environment I can; an environment in which everyone feels they belong. By striving to implement networks that cater to everyone’s taste, such as lunchtime sporting events or integrated junior and senior PC days, I believe a more welcoming and unified school environment between students and teachers will be brought about in my leadership. This will ideally lead to a greater sense of community within the College with regards to cohesion between students, teachers and any others of the like.
I look forward to what the next year has to offer for our College.
Thank you.
Vice Captain: Mia Watts
I’m Mia Watts and I’m your 2021 Vice Captain, and if you haven’t seen me around before that’s probably because I’m just as tall as the Year 8 kids. Although I’m short, I’m very loud, friendly and approachable.
My vision for 2021 as one of your leaders is to brighten our school by adding splashes of colour around that will make our school environment look more inviting in hopes of giving you a reason to smile and appreciate all that we have.
Looking forward to next year with all of you.
Vice Captain: Luka Marshall
Morning everyone, my name is Luka Marshall and I’m one of your Vice Captains for the end of 2020 and 2021. If you don’t recognise me, you may have seen me in a kilt yesterday, if this rings any bells.
I have been a part of this College since Year 7, and hopefully, I can relate to experiences you have had during junior years, and I’d love to chat if there is anything you would like to talk about.
We, as a leadership team, hope to have many fundraisers this coming year and we would love for junior students to get involved. If you have any ideas, we would love to hear them.
I hope to see you all soon in the future.
Thank you.
Staff Development/Pupil Free Day - Friday 13th November

Year 11 Melbourne Cup Day
In keeping with tradition at St Joseph's Regional College, Year 11 students dressed up for the Melbourne Cup. It is indeed a special occasion for our senior students as they step out in their finest. Thank you to Acting Leader of Pastoral Care - Year 11, Ms Heidi O'Reilly, for coordinating the day. I refer you to Ms O'Reilly's report below.
On Tuesday 3rd November, Year 11 students had the opportunity to celebrate Melbourne Cup Day. On the day, students looked very stylish in their fancy attire. They celebrated the event by gathering as a year group to have a BBQ lunch, which was organised and prepared by the Student Leadership Team. Additionally, students participated in Fashions on the Field, where Miss Lewis, Mr McMillian, Mr Inatey and Mrs Jensen, well-known for their smart fashion choices, determined who was the best dressed on the day.
To finish the day, Year 11 gathered together to watch the race at 3.00pm. I thank all of Year 11 for their enthusiasm and participation on the day.

Trivia Competition
This week during assembly, all year groups were involved in a trivia competition. There were four categories that students were able to test their knowledge; General Knowledge, Famous Faces Symbolic Brain Teasers and Name the Song.
The competition, as always, was hotly contested. Congratulations to the following overall class winners from each year group who all received a small prize.
Ms Hart - 7 English 1
Mr Pares - 8 Technology 5
Mr Morson - 9 MAA 2
Mr Hazell - 10 Science 5
College Uniform
St Joseph's Regional College uniform provides an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate a sense of pride, unity and loyalty to our College community.
In order for such positive outcomes to occur, it is essential that our uniform is "worn well" according to our "door to door" policy. Hence, when students travel to and from the College, attend parent/teacher evenings and while in the community, the high standard of presenting well in one's uniform needs to be maintained.
I would request that parents, staff and students work together to ensure that these basic expectations are met:
- Boys' shirts are long enough to be tucked in.
- Boys' grey College shorts with a plain black belt, can be purchased from St Agnes' Uniform Shop or from the College Office.
- School shoes are plain black, leather, lace-up and polishable.
- Girls' skirts are worn to the knee.
- All students with long hair must have it worn neatly tied back from the face.
For full College uniform and jewellery expectations, please see page 10 & 11 of the 2020 College Diary or the College website - https://www.pmreglism.catholic.edu.au/uniform
Once again, I thank you for your cooperation and support with regard to ensuring that we are consistent in our approach to wearing the College uniform correctly.
Mrs Tanya Daley
Assistant Principal - Pastoral Care & Staff Support

HSC Exams
Next week, our HSC exams conclude on Wednesday. On behalf of our College community I would like to thank our HSC Presiding Officer, Mrs Sonia Joel, and Mrs Di Roberts, HSC Supervisor, plus other supervisors who have assisted with various exams. Sonia and Di presided at all exams, and we thank them for looking after our students so well. They are efficient in their administration of the HSC exams, but also put our students at ease with their friendly and caring manner. I would also like to thank Mr Ian Lutton, our Leader of Curriculum, for his organisation of all aspects of the exams. The resultant smooth running of the exams provides a reassuring, calming environment for our HSC students.
Exams next week are as follows:
Monday 9th November 2020 | Chemistry English Extension 1 |
Tuesday 10th November 2020 | Food Technology Earth & Environment Science |

The area we are looking to revitalise is the area currently to the south of the Library building, adjacent to the Amphitheatre, already with an existing roof - it is part of the Library 'footprint' already, but is not enclosed. After seeking initial advice from students and staff, we have written a draft proposal and we are seeking any input you might have for us to include.
If you would like to join the discussion, you can fill out this link to record your thoughts.

Christmas Hamper Appeal
Your child may ask you for cash or items to support our Christmas Hamper Appeal. This year, due to Covid 19, the Parish is putting generic Hampers together and has determined there will be three labelled 'Boxes' with specific items in each box along with two $10 vouchers. Small families will receive one Box of each A, B and C (See attached flyer) and two Vouchers. Larger families will receive multiples of Boxes A, B and C.
Students are being asked to elect to bring a specific item to add to a Box or bring $5 in to contribute to purchasing some of the items and the Vouchers. All items will need to be brought in and by the end of Week 6. Hamper Boxes will be packed and taken to the Church on 26th November.
Thank you in anticipation of your support for this wonderful Christmas Initiative. It is amazing to see the joy on the faces of those who receive Hampers each year! As always, we appreciate your support for the many ways the College supports our communities.
KEY DATES
Wednesday, 25th November - Hamper Boxes are packed and finalised.
Thursday, 26th November - Hampers delivered to the St Agnes' Parish Church
Sincerely
The Evangelisation Team at SJRC
We love catching up with past students and following their journeys since graduating from St Joseph's Regional College. The breadth and variety of career paths and life choices are amazing and make for such interesting reading. Our current students will find inspiration in these stories.
This week, we shine a spotlight on one of our more recent graduates, Tahlia Hunter, who is studying and working locally, edging closer to her goal of qualifying as a Physiotherapist. Great work Tahlia!

Year 8 and Year 10 Writers' Enrichment Days
If you have an interest in writing and you want to further develop your craft, then the Writing Enrichment Day is for you.
Due to the generous funding from the CSO, the Writers’ Enrichment Days are free.
Dates:
Year 8 Writers' Enrichment Day is Thursday 12 November, Week 5, via zoom at school.
Year 10 Writers' Enrichment Day is Thursday 26 November, Week 7, either zoom on-site or at MacKillop.
For both days students are asked to bring a packed lunch, pens and their own device.
We are lucky enough to have local author Hayley Lawrence at the helm for each of these Writing Enrichment Days. SJRC students will be familiar with her gripping novel ‘Inside the Tiger’.

Hey you! What have you watched, read or listened to lately?

We know how much SJRC students can enjoy a book, a good movie, a podcast and music.
And we know how cool it would be to read their reviews here on their very own school newsletter.
So, students of SJRC: Now’s the time to scale the great heights of seeing your name in print and knowing that you’ve provided valuable information to your peers and friends about a book or movie or podcast that they would love
- or not.
Email your recommendations to Mrs McKee (penny.mckee@lism.catholic.edu.au) and let’s read your take on books, podcasts and music that is great! Or not so much.

The “Homework Hub” was established to provide students with a chance to complete set work and study away from the distractions that can occur at home.
It takes place in the library at the following times:
- Monday to Thursday 3.15pm to 4.30pm.
Attendance is voluntary and is under the supervision of experienced staff.
The library is open from 7.30am every morning providing another opportunity for our students to work quietly outside of school hours.
If your son or daughter struggles to do homework and study, this may be the solution to get them “on the way” to the results they are looking for.

A little about Head Heart and Hands Project - The Head Heart and Hands project is a part of the Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network. We have been awarded a grant from the NSW Government called “Increasing Resilience to Climate Change” and we are running events and workshops for the local community to provide real-life, everyday actions that anyone can try.
Imagining Our Hastings Food Future
During Fair Food Week 2020, local community-based project 'Head Heart and Hands' are hosting a Zoom panel (from 6.00-7.30pm on 22nd October). The panel of Hastings locals, titled “Imagining Our Hastings Food Future”, brings together residents who contribute to our resilient local food system, economy and community in diverse ways. The panellists are market gardeners Desley and Rod Bailey (Masters of Fresh), Local Birpai woman and CSU lecturer Arlene McInherney, waste-reduction warrior 'Rhi Rebellion' Simmons, and urban permaculture gardener and community garden advocate Ali Bigg. Join with the family over dinner and feel inspired to grow a food system that can keep us fed in changing climate conditions.
As part of this project, community members are invited to create a 1-3 minute video of themselves demonstrating the variety of actions being taken to grow a resilient local food system. Families that send in a video of themselves will go in the running to win a copy of the acclaimed books, ‘Retrosuburbia’ and ‘Milkwood’. The videos don’t have to be fancy, they’re looking for real people, sharing imperfect actions they are doing that make some little difference to their own life. Little actions add up!”
