Donation of Dignity Bags

We have recently shared Paige Hudson's story about her making Dignity Bags for those in need. Paige's vision to make a difference and restore dignity for homeless youth in our local community came to fruition this week. From the humble beginnings of her Year 7 Religious Education assessment task in 2021, Paige set out to prepare a small amount of “Dignity Bags”, filled with essential hygiene products, to donate to the local homeless community. With the assistance of her Mum and Dad, and her connections, the project soon saw Paige become a project manager. The Youthwell Grant she applied for was successful ($1000), contributing to the overall quantity of the Dignity Bags, sleeping bags and blankets.

Paige_Hudson_Digity_Bags_handover_160622_48_edit.jpg

This week we had the pleasure of meeting Deb, from YP Space, and Sarah, from New Horizons, who were invited to meet with Paige and her family so Paige could make her donation of Dignity Bags to both organisations. Deb mentioned that YP Space supports young people Paige’s age. Both representatives affirmed Paige’s efforts and were grateful for the difference Paige will make in the lives of our local homeless young people.

Each bag contained a handwritten note from Paige and I could not be prouder of Paige as a witness to Jesus and an ambassador for the College.

Well done Paige. You certainly have made a difference!

At this week's assembly, we were treated to two musical performances. Not only did we enjoy listening to the saxophone ensemble we were also entertained by Jonah Garven's HSC Music piece, Watermelon Man' accompanied by Mr Mark Spence on the drums and Harry Turnbull on the double bass.

It is always a great delight to have students perform for the College.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Our Vinnies Winter Appeal is well underway. Over the past few weeks, we have been requesting donations of good-quality warm clothing and blankets. Thank you sincerely for the donations we have received so far, however, we would love more. All donations can be dropped to the College Office or students can place them in the tubs provided outside the Wilson and Innes Office.

Last year we raised over $2300, this year we are aiming to raise $2500. We thank you for your past support and ask that students continue to support the arranged activities so we can reach our fundraising goal.

Today at the College we held the 'Big Activity Day' fundraiser. Students and staff had the opportunity to participate in lunchtime activities such as:

  • Sponge Throwing
  • Mini Putt-Putt
  • Ball Toss/Block stack
  • Coin Line Roll (Closest to the line)
  • Quoits
  • Bowling
  • Hula Hoop Competition.

As you can see from the below photos, the Sponge Throwing activity is always a favourite with the students, although, not so much fun for the staff.

Following on from today's Big Activity Day, next Friday, there is an out-of-uniform day. We ask that students bring in a 'GOLD COIN' on this day. All money donated goes towards our Vinnies Winter Appeal fundraising efforts.

During lunchtime, we will hold our annual Vinnie’s Fashion Parade. As part of the Fashion Parade, students have the opportunity to get involved and have some great fun by entering the parade, and possibly winning a prize for one of the categories.

This year's categories are:

  • Best Dressed Royal Couple
  • Best dressed Group
  • Best dressed Tradie
  • Best dressed Hippy
  • Best dressed Vinnies Classic
  • Best Dressed Melbourne Cup Day

The cost to enter the Vinnies Fashion Parade is $2 for individuals and $10 for groups.

Vinnies SleepOut

Once again St Joseph’s Regional College will be hosting the Vinnies School Sleepout. The event will be held at the College from 5:30pm on Friday 26th August, and will conclude at 7:30 am on Saturday the 27th August. A dinner consisting of soup and bread will be provided and breakfast will consist of some fruit donated by local grocers. Students and staff from MacKillop College will also join us on the night.

To register your intention to participate, please use the QR Code provided in the poster below.

Participants will be required to bring a pillow, sleeping bag and warm clothing and $10 towards the cost of the evening. A Vinnies School Sleepout allows students to connect on a personal level with the issue of homelessness by sleeping out as a school community, whilst raising awareness to support the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society. The event provides just a glimpse into what life is like for people facing homelessness in Australia. This is an opportunity for your child to have a real impact.

Students have a permission note and a Fund Raising Form and are encouraged to seek sponsorship for the event. The $10 fee is due with the permission note and the Funds raised are due on the night.

Did you know?

  • $15 provides a day’s meals for a family struggling to put food on the table
  • $30 provides someone with a bed for a night in one of our crisis accommodation services
  • $50 provides school supplies and excursion fees for a child experiencing disadvantage
  • $80 provides a life skills course (cooking, job interview prep or computer skills at TAFE)

SHINE Gathering

Next term is the SHINE Gathering. SHINE is a two-day event held in Coffs Harbour for students in Year 9 interested in participating in ministry initiatives. It is also for students from the Year 10 Youth Ministry class and Year 11 and 12 who would like to be a leader at the event.

This event is run by the YMOs in the Diocese and is a great opportunity for an introduction to having faith, but also a great way to meet like-minded people and learn many things through the workshops. Attendees are able to choose from the many workshops on offer, based on their interests as well as the amazing worship time.

Students who wish to participate in the SHINE Gathering can do so by registering via the QR code (found on the below poster and also pinned up around the College) For further information, students can speak to one of our YMOs or Mr Gobius.

Green_Team_batteries_Recycle_pens_3_.jpg

At this week's assembly, our Student Leader of Sustainability, Daniel Ryan, made a presentation on recycling opportunities available at the College.

Recycling Batteries

Daniel spoke about our ongoing efforts to recycle batteries. There is a battery collection point available in our College Office in which any used or unwanted batteries can be dropped into.

Recycling Pens and Stationery

The second exciting recycling initiative Daniel presented was the collection of used pens, highlighters and other stationery items as listed in the poster.

Unfortunately, there are a number of items that are not able to be collected such as Pencils, glue sticks, scissors, metal and plastic rulers and rubber as they are made of mixed materials or pose a hazard and therefore can not be recycled.

Daniel has placed collection stations in the office, the office print room and the library and encourages students and families to get behind this initiative.

Yellow Recycle Bins - will soon be available in the playground and students are encouraged to use them as it helps minimise our College's footprint.

If you have some green ideas that can be implemented at our College the Green Team would love to hear them. Students who would like to become involved in joining the Green Team, please see Daniel or Ms Mooney in the Library for further information.

What is CAFS?

CAFS stands for Community and Family Services. CAFS is a Year 11 & Year 12 subject in which students develop knowledge, understanding and skills needed to have a direct and positive influence on the quality of their life and the lives of others both now and in the future. Concepts in CAFS extend beyond the classroom and into real-life settings. Students gain first-hand experience in helping the marginalised groups in society and becoming better human beings in the process. Have you ever wondered why that person is asking for money on the street or felt that it is unfair that people are treated differently because of their gender, race, disability or sexuality, then the CAFS would be interesting for you.

I would encourage Year 10 students moving into Year 11 in 2023 to look further into this eye-opening course.

At this week's assembly, we heard from Mr Ryan and Year 12 students Jade Atkins, Charlie Ross and Don Bittu about their experience at last week's CAFS Immersion Excursion.

CAFS Immersion Excursion

Last week, Year 12 CAFS students embarked on their study trip to Sydney. As part of the CAFS HSC course, we study four main groups: the Homeless, LGBTQIA, youth and disabled.

It was a valuable insight into the lives of marginalised people and the struggles they face every day from being able to eat, survive, put clothes on their back, gain a sense of dignity and respect for themselves and recognition in a society that far too often leaves them behind. Students saw and heard from the organisations that advocate for the minority groups that society pushes aside and forgets. This trip provided students with an opportunity to give back to those who need help every day just to stay alive and to be treated as human beings.

I refer you to their report below:

Day one: The 5:30am start tested the commitment of everyone, however, we got away on time and made our first stop in Redfern to visit Twenty 10, an organisation that advocates for LGBTQIA youth. We spoke with young people who identified in the LGBTQIA community, one of them who was from Port Macquarie, listened to how they are standing up for young people like you that struggle to be accepted and recognised for who they are, human beings. Valuable insights and takeaways for our students as they prepare for their HSC exams.

Our afternoon session was with an organisation called The Big Issue. If you have ever been to the city and seen people selling magazines on the street corner, well that’s them.

We heard from a young lady Racheal who now sells the big issue magazine each week. The $4:50 per magazine she makes enables her to remain clothed and fed but most importantly it gives her back her identity and allows her to remember her own name that she had forgotten over the years because no one had spoken to her and actually asked. It empowers her to escape the domestic violence that she faced for many years until the Big Issue gave her a chance to survive.

We met and interacted with homeless people in Martin place Tuesday night, We met families who can’t afford rent and construction workers who just don’t have a room because they can’t afford one. Kiwi, the friend we have now who worked for the carnival here in Port Macquarie as an engineer for the last 17 years who is without residence at the moment. We met many people with similar stories who all had one thing in common, they were enormously grateful we were there and thanked us so many times for being there in the cold with them just to talk and show them the dignity they deserve.

To see our Year 12s standing on the back of a Ute handing out bags of clothes to people and smiling and interacting and showing love for those people was a humbling and memorable moment. Conversations were had with many homeless people as our Year 12s just walked amongst them to show how much they cared.

A ferry home to watch the lights of Vivid topped off a memorable day one.

Day two involved a visit to Our Big Kitchen, where we cooked food packages for the organisation that hands out some of the thousands of meals each day, that sadly still isn’t enough to meet the needs of those on the street.

A visit in the afternoon to Matthew Talbot House, which caters for homeless men, where we donated goods and then assisted in packing hundreds of toiletry packs to be distributed on the streets. Listening to the stories from our hosts was invaluable and so rich in examples for our HSC writing content.

Dinner in Chinatown and watching Queensland go 1 up in the origin rounded off a memorable day 2.

Day three: Our final visit was to the largest Vinnies organisation in NSW, which was a very humbling experience. We left appreciating the clothes on our backs, how to be better people, how to appreciate a warm bed, friends, food, school, family and more.

We heard how difficult it is for families to gain assistance from government organisations, saw homeless in its rawness, disabled and youth at its most disadvantaged, LGBTI at its most ostracised and what did we learn?

We learnt how lucky we are here in Port Macquarie, at this school, with these teachers, with you as friends, we learnt how to be better people.

Creative Arts Nest, A4Art Showcase!

Creativity has been exploding at the St Agnes' Education, Creative Arts Nest, A4Art Prize. With more than 240 artworks submitted to the inaugural competition, the top 82 finalist artworks have been touring around St Agnes' Education schools in their 'pop-up' A4Art Exhibition.

The conversations between the NEST Team, students and staff have been open, educational and engaging. The team is already bracing itself for next year's competition with so much interest and enthusiasm displayed amongst budding artists.

The Creative Arts Nest A4Art Room proved to be a showstopper at Friday Nights Port Macquarie ArtWalk. With over 1800 tokens placed into jars the Port Macquarie community eagerly voted for their favourite artwork under the enormous blow-up tent housing the A4Art exhibition. It was wonderful to see the greater community sharing in the creativity displayed amongst St Agnes' Education students and staff.

Finally, the Creative Arts Nest being held tonight will host the A4Art Awards Night at Newman Senior Technical College. 82 finalists and their guests have been invited to the event where the winners and highly commended artists will be announced for each of the categories. Keep your eyes posted on the Creative Arts Nest Facebook and Instagram pages to keep up to date with the night.
