On behalf of the College community, we congratulate Mrs Tanya Daley on her appointment.
College Song Version Competition
Over the past few months, Mrs Johnson, our Leader of Creative Arts, has been running a 'What's your Version' song competition. This competition had the aim of re-recording the current version of our College song which was recorded by Aodhamair Lenagh Maguire songwriter (SJRC) Emma Anderson on vocals (Mackillop) in 2002, 20 years ago.
At this week's assembly, the competition winner was announced, and also as a College community, we heard the new version of our College song for the first time. Congratulations to the winning entry Year 12 student, Jonah Garven. Due to Jonah being in the middle of his Trial HSC exams, he was, unfortunately, unable to accept the winning prize of recording his version of the College song. Instead, the runner-ups were given the task of recording his song version and bringing it to life. We thank Coastal Music for gifting, Jonah, a gift voucher which we are sure he will put to good use.
Thank you to the following students for sharing their talents in recording the new instrumentals for our College song which we will most likely be using for the next 20 years!
Year 10 students: Aryan Vaishnav(keyboard) Adam Cook (guitar), Harry Turnbull (bass) Georgia McMahon (vocals) Lauren Johnston (vocals), and
Year 11 guitarist Jeffrey Keena.
All very grateful for the chance to experience a professional studio and the process involved in recording a song. Fantastic work by the students who were involved in the recording.
I thank, Mrs Johnson, for this initiative and for sharing the recording experience with our College.
Please enjoy listening to the new version of our College song.
Madge - School Support Dog
During this week's assembly, we were very excited to introduce MADGE our College Support Dog who we hope will commence working at our College in Week Six.
We are really excited to have Madge join our staff and look forward to her having a positive impact on the wellbeing of our College community. In order for this to happen, it is important that we all follow these rules, especially while she is in training. A consistent approach from all members of the College will increase Madge's ability to perform her role.
Madge is a 14 week old, female Labradoodle who is extremely brave and has undertaken training through Kaysadale Farm. The trainers hold Certificate III in Dog Training and Behaviour through NDTF. These trainers specialise in training support dogs for schools, medical practices, speech pathologists, nursing homes, hospitals and refuges. Madge will continue with her training over the next 12 months and will be slowly introduced to the school over the next few weeks.
It is a well-documented fact that dogs can have a calming effect on our emotions and even benefit our physical health. Madge will be part of our research into the effects of dogs on student wellbeing. Labradoodles, in particular, are well-suited for being socialised and trained to serve as therapy/support dogs. Madge was purchased from a reputable breeder, is de-sexed, microchipped, and registered with the Taree City Council. She is up to date with worming and vaccinations, and has regular health checks. Madge has a hypoallergenic coat which means that there is limited shedding or allergic reactions. She will also be regularly bathed and groomed.
The rationale behind the introduction of Madge to our College is for her to be a part of the school's Wellbeing program. We intend to use Madge to assist with addressing attendance issues, social and emotional learning and reading programs within the school. According to Putz (2014) therapy dogs provide substantial social-emotional and learning benefits to students. Data from a study involving five schools found that “using therapy dogs in schools could benefit students by serving as an intervention and helping students learn skills that result in better connection and relationships, and skills that can assist with self-regulation and self-control.” It has also been found that having support dogs in schools has physiological and behavioural benefits. Most importantly these studies have focussed on literacy and anxiety-related issues and they have found substantial evidence to support the role of support dogs in these areas.
Students and staff will be given guidance about interacting with Madge, including handling and petting, as well as good hygiene practices including hand washing. All interactions with Madge will be optional for students and Madge, and there will be three dedicated staff handlers, one of whom will be with Madge at all times.
All families have received communication via email if they do not want their child to interact with Madge. For your convenience, the following is the link: Student Interaction Concerns
Please take a moment to view the video below that Madge's human mum, Ms Wallis has made to keep both Madge and our students happy.
YHQ @ SJRC
On Monday 1st August, I had the pleasure of attending the YHQ @ SJRC presentations where our young entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas at the YHQ@SJRC Presentation Evening. The evening was a resounding success and it was wonderful to see the many smiling faces of families in the audience. I was very proud to see the high standard of presentations from this group of fine young people.
While it takes a team to facilitate a project such as this, I sincerely thank our Leader of High Potential Learners, Mrs Amanda Cassegrain who has been outstanding in her organisation and execution of this program. Thank you to the team of staff, Mr Ian Lutton, Mr Shaun Niness, Mr Matt Cato, Ms Karyn Mooney, Ms Sarah McLeod, Mr Greg Hollis and Mr Jim Harper who have encouraged and supported the development of our Year 10 students' skills to take on this entrepreneurial challenge.
I refer you to Mrs Cassegrain's in-depth report following.
Music Camp
I refer you to Mrs Green's report under the Creative Arts banner.

Mrs Tanya Daley
Principal
YHQ @ SJRC
Thank you Mrs Daley for your introduction and words of affirmation regarding this very worthy program. I too am extremely proud of this group of Year 10 students.
I also express my gratitude to the panel of outside judges who generously shared their time, expertise and guidance with our students. Thank you to Kath Bowler, Liesa Davies and Shane Ryan.
Last year’s YouthHeadQuarters program was somewhat of an experiment with 27 students in six teams participating. I think the numbers this year speak for themselves as we have doubled in size to 54 students in 10 teams, accounting for a quarter of the Year 10 cohort. This is a real testament to our students’ initiative and desire to challenge themselves.
The teams were presented with a range of problem statements, the core challenge for which they needed to present a commercial solution. They engaged in the design thinking process to define the problem, and empathise with the end user to ideate a product or service to provide a solution to the challenge. Those challenges included: social connectivity, Post-Covid business opportunities and environment sustainability.
All teachers involved in this program were so proud of our students on presentation night and it was wonderful to share in their excitement and sense of accomplishment.
All teams impressed the audience and judges with their professionalism and creativity, not to mention their outfits, tech-savvy slides and quirky role plays.
Congratulations to all participants:

In the words of some of our students:
- “It was an amazing experience that I would recommend to all, it is a one of a kind project. You develop your skills, develop friendships with people you didn’t know pre-YHQ and most importantly it was really fun”.
- “Thank you teachers for organising such an amazing project and an amazing presentation night last night”.
- “I loved it, and my four teammates made me very comfortable during everything, overall I felt safe in YHQ. My friends and I were always excited for when it was on, it felt like a different space in which you could escape and do something fun with friends, but also feel proud of what you’re doing”.
- “I was so scared to speak in high school, I couldn’t even read in front of a class before that night, I still get nervous but it’s so much better and I’m grateful”.
- “It was just an amazing opportunity to be a part of. Not that it wasn’t a challenge, it definitely was hard at times. Yet, through challenge, we grow as an individual, especially if we are to succeed. So those who don’t take on challenges, are those who do not grow past themselves to be greater. That is why I would recommend YHQ to others”.
- “I had one friend in my group which was really good but I didn’t know anyone else, I was able to develop connections with other people that I didn’t think I would be able to”.
- “Thank you, the teachers were incredible and so much work was put into it”.

Year 11 Mass
Year 11 students celebrated their Service Mass on Wednesday this week. Our Service mass is traditionally an opportunity for students to make a difference through service or fundraising initiatives. This year our Service Mass was focused on raising funds for St Joseph’s Primary School in Coraki, one of the primary schools near Lismore which was devastated by floods earlier in the year. Our Parish Priest, Father Paul was able to join us to lead our mass. His homily was focused on his experiences as a student at nearby Trinity College. He shared his memories of helping as a student to lift all the furnishings, artwork, chairs and supplies from the ground floor to higher levels of the building as flood waters were rising. This year’s floods, however, exceeded any previous water level, so even these preparations were not enough to save the possessions, furnishing and homes of many families and schools in the region.
The very kind donations and messages from students during the mass resulted in raising more than $600 for the school. These funds will be spent on replacing the soft furnishings for the library such as bean bags, cushions and chairs as well as supporting the meals program which helps to provide food to many families who are still displaced from their homes after the devastation of the floods.
I am so very proud of the compassion and kindness shown by our Year 11 students to do all that they can to help others in our diocese to achieve the fullness of life.

Street retreat for me was something I never imagined it to be. Looking back on my experience, what I thought it was going to be like was nothing compared to what it actually was. I genuinely wanted to go as I knew I would have been making a first-hand movement on homelessness, and be able to make a difference even though I had really imagined it would have been the smallest difference, but I knew at the time it would have been worth it, just to make a small difference.
To sum up Street Retreat, I would say it definitely changed my outlook on everything I have in my life and my happiness, because you really do see people in a bad way and almost everyone I talked to over the four days always said hello with a huge smile and had the happiest personalities when they really had nothing and were living a really unfortunate and unhappy lifestyle on the streets.
Findlay Marshall
Street Retreat was a great experience for me personally and I am extremely glad I made the decision to go. Over the four days, I went to three different ministries, including Emmanuel City Mission, Rosie's and a Vinnies sustainability talk. Each of these was extremely valuable to me, as they allowed me to put my own gifts to work and help others. At these ministries, I carried out a range of tasks, such as sorting clothes, serving people and cleaning up. It was great to see how even the small tasks I carried out would make such an impact on the people I met, and it put into perspective how lucky I really am as a person. Everyone I talked to was incredibly nice and welcoming, and most were happy to sit and have a chat about the footy, their interests or the weather. I found that attending Street Retreat has also put into perspective how widespread and unseen the issue of homelessness is within society. At each ministry, people who looked just like you or me would turn up and it was quite shocking to see just how "normal'' they were. I hadn't previously been exposed to a lot of homelessness, and in going to Street Retreat I was able to see it first-hand and really face the issue.
I feel that the retreat overall has opened my eyes to issues I wasn't previously seeing, and it has allowed me to see how I can use my own gifts to help those less fortunate. It was also great to connect with students from the Lismore diocese and meet new people. Overall, the trip was a great experience and I felt that it was a real eye opener for me as a person.
Jacob Somers
Recently I had the honour of going to Proclaim Lismore’s Street Retreat hosted in Brisbane. This experience was hands down one of the best experiences I have ever encountered, and I am so grateful for the opportunity.
Street Retreat allowed me to go out of my comfort zone, feel a sense of empathy, and meet new friends who all had similar interests and wanted to make a difference and change in our local community to help people who need it most. Thank you, Mr Gobius and Emily for giving us this amazing opportunity. Thank you for listening.
Ella Juric
Street Retreat was one of the best retreats I have been on and anyone in Year 10 that loves to help people should definitely consider applying next year. I meet so many new people from all across Lismore Dioceses whom I really connected with as we share the same interests. I had the opportunity to help those in need and go to three ministries that showed me how lucky I am to have a roof over my head and have food every night. One highlight for me was when I helped out at the Brisbane Relief Hub. I gave a 24 year old man living on the street my spare change, the look on his face was enough to make my heart melt as he was so thankful.
Attending Street Retreat helped me to realise how lucky I am to have what I have and that we really “eat like kings.” It is a retreat I would 100% recommend to anyone as I really enjoyed it. It was very eye-opening for me to experience something like this, as I have never been exposed to homelessness that much before. Coming out of Street Retreat I would like to let people know that homelessness is a very big issue and that with our help we can make these people’s lives worth living.
Emma Freeman
Street Retreat was an amazing experience that challenged me both mentally and physically to get out of my comfort zone and learn about homelessness in Brisbane. Throughout the four day retreat, I attended 3 Ministries which were the Vinnies Street Retreat, Brisbane Relief Hub and Emmanuel City Mission. At Vinnies Street Retreat I learnt about what Vinnies is and why people start to experience homeless.
The highlight for me was seeing people's faces brighten up as you handed them a burger or said hello. A challenge would be seeing other kids my age being homeless, with no parents or anyone looking after them. I imagined myself being homeless and how hard that would be to have no one to rely on but yourself. I encourage all future Year 11 students to attend this retreat as it’s truly an eye opener and you will create many memories with those you meet.
Luminosity - ‘Courage, Creativity and Connection’
On 27th to 29th July, sic Year 10 students, Grace Kruk, Tom Jenkins, Cora Puttick, Jack McManus and Alaska Webber, had the opportunity to attend Luminosity at the Glass House. The event is focused on youth leadership and gives young people the opportunity to be inspired by engaging speakers. The theme for this year’s Luminosity was ‘Courage, Creativity and connection’ The students will have the opportunity to convey their wonderful experience to the rest of our College at our next assembly. I would like to acknowledge and thank Legacy Port Macquarie for sponsoring a number of our students so that we could offer the opportunity to more of our Yr10 students.
Here is some of the feedback from the students.
“Luminosity is a youth leadership program that was designed to inspire and uplift the youth within our community. It is a 3-day event that I was lucky enough to attend packed with performances, music, and interesting people. The three key themes over the days were ‘Courage, Creativity and connection’ and every day was just as enjoyable as the last. It was an amazing experience and I am so happy I had the opportunity to attend. I met new people and listened and learned the incredible stories that made some of the speakers who they are today”. (Grace Kruk)
“Luminosity was a great experience to be able to meet new people and get a chance to learn about some of the vast differences in the way in which people have grown up. This experience was a great way to learn a lot about myself and some of the ways in which I could improve myself.”(Thomas Jenkins)
Roadtesting Apps to Nourish your Faith
This month, the parish is encouraging us to roadtest the FREE Loyola Press app 'Reimagining the Examen', which offers a unique prayer experience that’s tailored to your needs and mood. Each Examen, based on St Ignatius’s 500-year-old prayer, guides you through a stimulating reflection on your day, helping you invite God into your nitty-gritty. Choose an Examen that matches your current state of being, or pray for that day’s scheduled reflection. The app is suitable for iPhones or iPads.
What is the Examen?
St Ignatius of Loyola created the Examen to be a very short prayer that can be prayed at any time. In the Examen, we review our recent past to find God and his blessings in our daily life. Ignatius would say that the Examen should be the most important moment of our day because this moment affects every other moment.
How Do I Pray the Examen?
There are five simple steps to the Examen, which this app leads you through:
- Relish the moments that went well and all of the gifts you have today.
- Request that the Spirit leads you through your review of the day.
- Review your day.
- Repent of any mistakes or failures.
- Resolve, in concrete ways, to live tomorrow well.
Each week the Parish produces a news bulletin. In this week’s bulletin:
- Well deserved recognition for Aged Care Employees
- Bishops Social Justice statement released
- Feast of St Mary of the Cross - 8 August
- Reflection on the Gospel and the Commonwealth
- Feast of the Assumption - 15 August
- Fr Prodencio taking leave for 2 months
- Care and Lifestyle - Pastoral Care team member
- Seeking a Catholic Chaplain for MNC Correctional Centre
- Gospels for the Liturgical Year - Free online short course
- Covid Safety Rules update

St Agnes' Parish Street Retreat 2022 - Local Experience
The annual St Agnes' Parish Street Retreat for Year 11 students was again a successful event ensuring participants from our Parish Secondary schools were made aware of the needs of some of the less fortunate in our community.
The St Agnes' Parish Street Retreat this year began with a launch evening at MacKillop College Senior Campus featuring an Opening Prayer, Retreat Orientation by, Marg Gobius, from MacKillop College followed by some role-playing and discussion facilitated by Port Macquarie LifeLine staff. LifeLine spoke about the need to listen intently and without judgement to people while on the Retreat.
Activities this past week have been a Homelessness week event at the Wauchope Neighbourhood Centre on Thursday also attended by New Horizons and the MAD Coffee and Food Van. SJRC students were responsible for cooking BBQs to provide free meals to attendees and visitors. They did this with much aplomb feeding numerous clients.
On Friday morning SJRC students and Youth Ministry Officers attended the Homelessness Week Awareness Day on Town Green, helping providers to set up their tents and then familiarise themselves with all the providers and what they do for needy people in our community. Their help was welcomed and appreciated by all and they came away feeling like they had learned a lot.
On Friday afternoon students attended the Cooloonbung Creek Port Outreach BBQ which has offered free meals to homeless people in Port for the past 14 years. Participants were able to connect with friends in the community that are either homeless or in need of a free meal. Good discussion was had and students came away with some real experience of some of the needs in our wider community.
It is hoped that participants will be able to share this experience with others in Year 11 and be able to take forward the need for combined community action to address the, often hidden, needs of our local communities.
The students involved were Ned Mcrae and Liam Ross. Thanks also go to Mrs Gobius from MacKillop who organised many of the opportunities, Ms Flanagan, our Leader of Student Wellbeing, Year 11. Emily Burg and Ella Smith (YMOs) for your support this year.
Vinnies SleepOut
Once again St Joseph’s Regional College will be hosting the Vinnies School Sleepout. The event will be held at the College from 5:30pm on Friday 26th August, and will conclude at 7:30 am on Saturday the 27th August. A dinner consisting of soup and bread will be provided and breakfast will consist of some fruit donated by local grocers. Students and staff from MacKillop College will also join us on the night.
To register your intention to participate, please use the QR Code provided in the poster below.
Participants will be required to bring a pillow, sleeping bag and warm clothing and $10 towards the cost of the evening. A Vinnies School Sleepout allows students to connect on a personal level with the issue of homelessness by sleeping out as a school community, whilst raising awareness to support the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society. The event provides just a glimpse into what life is like for people facing homelessness in Australia. This is an opportunity for your child to have a real impact.
Students have a permission note and a Fund Raising Form and are encouraged to seek sponsorship for the event. The $10 fee is due with the permission note and the Funds raised are due on the night.
Did you know?
- $15 provides a day’s meals for a family struggling to put food on the table
- $30 provides someone with a bed for a night in one of our crisis accommodation services
- $50 provides school supplies and excursion fees for a child experiencing disadvantage
- $80 provides a life skills course (cooking, job interview prep or computer skills at TAFE)

Tell Them From Me- Student Survey
As part of our focus on school improvement, St Joseph’s Regional College will be participating in an online survey for students – Tell Them From Me® (TTFM®). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them.
This week, our Year 7-11 students were given the opportunity and time to participate in this survey during regular school hours. Next week, our Year 12 cohort will also be allocated time to complete their survey. The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish to. Information has been sent home to parents with an “opt out” Google Form to complete if you do not wish your child to complete the survey.
Tell Them From Me- Parent Survey
We will also be distributing a survey for parents and carers via the TTFM platform. We encourage all parents to please complete the survey so we can best improve our practice to align with the needs of our families.
All families should have received the Tell Them From Me parent survey via email. For your convenience, I have included the link Tell Them From Me Parent Survey It is estimated the survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Music Camp
Last Friday, the College Concert Band and choir travelled to St Agnes' Primary School and gave a wonderful performance that saw the audience up on their feet, dancing and clapping with the exciting music. The concert ended with our students teaching the hand jive and dance actions to the younger ones, which they performed when the band played “Grease”. Very appropriate given Olivia Newton John's passing this week.
The musicians then travelled down to Port Central, where the choir performed “pop-up” songs in front of many cafes.
After lunch at McDonalds, the group continued down to the Francis Retreat at Bonny Hills for a three-day camp, where they enjoyed a variety of workshops, made new friends and learnt new skills from not only the leaders but also from sharing their personal skills and assisting others in their groups.
The weekend culminated in a very enjoyable parent Concert on Sunday afternoon, where all the music that had been learnt at Camp, was performed for all the families.
Many thanks to all the Music Staff and also Mr McKee and My Ryan who assisted at the Music Camp.

Nurses have been our frontline heroes right across the pandemic, but also certainly before those times. Our alumna Tahli Keller is one of those hard-working registered nurses, accumulating lots of experience across many sectors of the health system. Very well done Tahli!
Mary Bouwer (Shelley) - Class of 2016
Aladdin JR Choir
This is an open invitation to those in Years 5, 6, 7 & 8 who would like to be involved with the Aladdin JR Choir.
The choir will be vocally supporting our Aladdin JR cast in November this year.
We will not be holding auditions to be part of the choir, however, to be considered for a position, you'll need to complete the Expression of Interest Form with your parent/guardian.
Please see the following link to register and for information about what this commitment involves.
