Staff Long Service Awards

T3_Wk8_Assembly_070922_5_Copy.jpg

At our Week 8 College assembly, we had a special presentation to long-serving staff members. In the past two years, due to COVID, the usual Staff Long Service Award Mass could not be held.  We welcomed Mrs Anne O'Brien, Director of Mission St Agnes' Catholic Parish and former Principal of St Joseph's Regional College for 10 years from 2003 to 2012 to present our staff with an award and gift in recognition of their service to St Agnes’ Catholic Parish and Catholic Education.

In today’s very fluid workforce, recognition of people working at one organisation is rarely measured in 10, 20, 30 years or longer, but rather in months or a small number of years.

I am very proud of our teaching and support staff. Their commitment reflects a strong belief in what they are doing. This dedication is more than professionalism in education but needs to be seen as a vocation or a calling to serve others in the area of Catholic Education.

Congratulations to the following staff members.

Principal's Awards

Over the past two assemblies, 68 students have received a Principal’s Award. For the first time, we have had to split (into Houses) the presentation of these awards due to the number of recipients. It is wonderful to see so many students lending a hand when need and also taking responsibility for their learning

Congratulations to the following students from Flinders, Innes and Oxley Houses who received a Principal's Award at this week's assembly.

TAFE 'YES' Program

TAFE.jpg

Is your child a Year 10 student interested in a non-tertiary, post-school pathway? If so, the NSW TAFE “Yes” Program could be for them.

The program provides school students aged between 15 and 17 years with the opportunity to come to TAFE NSW and gain pre-vocational and foundation skills in an alternative environment, learn about TAFE NSW courses and pathways and explore post-school options.

By providing educational support pathways and individual learning plans, the partnership aims to help students re-engage with formal schooling, access further education or training options, or realise successful employment pathways. Students can lodge their interest by attending the sign-up meeting in C6 during PC on Friday 9th and Monday 12th September.

We encourage all parents and carers to tune into a FREE webinar on Tuesday, September 20th from 7.30pm - 8.30pm. The webinar is hosted by the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT and is entitled “Cyber-Bullying and Online Drama”. This webinar is designed for parents and carers of young people aged 11 to 18 years old.

It will cover:

  • starting conversations with your child about their online friendships and positive ways to deal with changing relationships;
  • understanding the rights, laws and community expectations that govern social media use;
  • where to seek help if your child is involved in a cyberbullying incident.
    Register via THIS LINK.

RU OK Day

RU_OK_Day_080922_58_.jpg

This week our school community participated in RUOK Day on Thursday, 8th September. Our focus for the day was two-fold:

  • Raising awareness around mental health struggles;
  • Educating our young people on how to assist a friend or family member if they are “not okay”.

To promote the importance of checking on people's mental health there were a variety of activities held throughout the day. To welcome the day our Student Leadership team, Year 11 Students, and Junior PC Leaders greeted students with a kind word, a lolly pop, and the all-important question ... RU OK?

During PC students watched the Youtube clip- 'How to ask a schoolmate R U OK?' https://youtu.be/Q4Db28pEGzQ and created conversation starters using speech bubbles that are being displayed on our College canteen window. There were also lunchtime activities taking place in the Library.

Thank you to Ms O’Reilly and our wonderful Student Leadership Team for their organisation of the day’s events.

If you require further information about RU OK Day and how you can help others, please visit ruok.org.au

Catholic World View

Over the next few weeks, I would like to share with you exacts from ‘The Mission of Jesus Christ Foundational Values’ developed by the Lismore Catholic Schools Office that assists and guides us in our understanding of what a Catholic School strives to be in our contemporary world.
“Catholic Worldview Catholicism is a comprehensive way of life that should permeate every aspect of a parish school’s activities and curriculum. Catholic Christianity has always fostered the belief that all human reality and, indeed, the whole material cosmos have been touched, blessed, and changed by the ‘Word becoming flesh’ (John 1:14). Such a belief brings forth a worldview or ‘lens’ which influences how we look at everything in life, and how we think and act in particular circumstances. Each person has a worldview, even if they are not aware of it or cannot articulate it.

A worldview helps a person answer life questions such as:
  • Who am I as a human person?
  • Does human life have a purpose?
  • How should I relate to others?
  • How do I know what is true?
  • Is there a truth beyond what can be seen, heard and touched?
  • What happens after death?
  • What do I value? ‘
The Catholic Worldview embraces the goodness of creation, the value of life itself, and the worth of each individual as made ‘in the image and God’ (Genesis 1:27). It challenges the 4 shallowness of consumerism, relativism and nihilism. Within the parish school, it seeks to develop systems and behaviours that honour the Truth revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.’

Our Parish Schools should reflect this understanding of 'The Catholic World View’ and permeate all that we do. It should be seen as something separate or added on but rather be foundational to our existence.

“As such, a genuinely Catholic view of Missionary activity should be evident in all aspects of parish school life—it should drive policy and processes; be reflected in an engaging pedagogy and the pastoral treatment of students; it should order staff relationships and help discern decisions; and most importantly it should proclaim the message of Jesus as ‘Good News’ for all. It should guide us in becoming who God calls us to be, namely, fully human. Therein, the Mission of Jesus Christ enables staff and ‘each student to form in themselves a clear idea of the meaning of life’ (The Catholic School, 31.)”

Congratulations Mrs Goldie

Claire_Goldie.jpeg
Staff member, Mrs Claire Goldie, was recently received into the Catholic Church, making her sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. With this, she was welcomed into the Catholic Church.

Claire wished to deepen her faith and has spent the last nine months undertaking a program for adults called Journey Into the Catholic Faith. Her cousin, Renee, accompanied her on this journey and also acted as Claire's sponsor.
Claire said “During the program, I was able to deepen my relationship with God, spend time with Fr Roland, have my questions answered and learn about the many facets of the Catholic Church. I look forward to sharing my ongoing faith journey with all members of our school community.”
On behalf of the staff of St Joseph's Regional College, congratulations, Claire.

Curious about becoming a Catholic

Catholic.PNG
At St Agnes’ Catholic Parish, we offer assistance and support for people considering the Catholic faith through our adult formation program ‘Journey into the Catholic Faith’. Our team is ready to guide and accompany enquirers with exploring the Christian faith in accordance with the Catholic Church’s understanding and with the process of becoming a fully initiated member of the Catholic community.
Sessions will be conducted weekly commencing in October. For further information contact the Pastoral Office on 6583 1024 or email pastoraloffice@stagnesparish.org.au.

Spring into Summer

Spring_into_Summer_2_Copy.jpg
It is that time again!
Staff were invited to join the St Agnes’ Spring into Summer Virtual Challenge by walking/running 149 km over 30 days (about 5 km each day). The distance is based on part of the famous Lourdes Pilgrimage in France.
The funds raised go to supporting families who struggle to find the money to pay for those experiences that most students in our schools take for granted.
This year, 61 staff members are participating in the Spring into Summer challenge based on House groups. Each day staff record their distances covered and the average distance achieved for each House will be calculated for the month. At the conclusion of the 30 days, the staff in the winning House will receive breakfast at their House staff meeting. The staff member achieving the highest amount will receive a special award!
We look forward to raising funds, and getting a little fitter, for this great cause.

SHINE Gathering

On the 18th and 19th of August, Mission Services and Youth Ministry Officers throughout the Diocese organised and facilitated the first SHINE Gathering since 2019. Held at St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour, SHINE is an element of the Student Discipleship Continuum, bringing Year 9 and 10 Youth Ministry (CSYMA) students together to learn what it means to be part of youth ministry in the Diocese of Lismore. SHINE provides an opportunity to connect with other students and to encounter Jesus in new and dynamic ways.

Two SJRC staff members attended, along with 26 students; two students from Year 9, the Year 10 Youth Ministry Class and five members of the Senior Youth Ministry attended the gathering. The Senior students and a number of Year 10 students played a vital role as small group leaders where they were given the opportunity to share a faith experience while practising and developing their skills as intentional disciples and leaders.

The theme for this year’s SHINE was ‘No Limits’, referring to the limitless nature of God’s love for us. This year, 500 students and 50 teachers, as well as special guests and keynote speakers, including Josh Angrisano, Sr Therese Mills MGL, Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe attended. In addition, we are very proud of Jacob Somers (Year 11) who gave a very important personal testimony to the whole gathering relating his faith journey and the impact of his experience at Street Retreat in Brisbane this year.

SHINE included music from the diocesan worship team ‘Wildfire’, games, engaging videos, 3 breakout sessions/workshops, dramas, adoration, prayer experiences and a very special concluding Mass. It was great to attend again after a two-year Covid enforced hiatus and we now look forward to attending IGNITE with some 27 students in September.

Ms Gill (Yr 10 Youth Ministry class teacher) and Mr Gobius accompanied the students.

This beautiful video featuring Youth Ministry students from some of our schools was played during SHINE. Check out the Proclaim Lismore Students Facebook page for more great content from SHINE.
