Term 4 Week 4 - 4th November 2022
Year 11 Semester Two Awards
This week, we acknowledged the academic achievements of our Year 11 students as they have now completed their Year 11 coursework. While this year's current Year 11 cohort is still known as 'Year 11' they have, in fact, commenced their HSC coursework. I spoke to Year 11 and encouraged them to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle outside of school during the next 3 terms; finding balance as they move towards their HSC examinations.
Thank you to the parents and friends who were able to join us for this celebration. Well done Year 11 and keep challenging yourself academically.
St Joseph’s Regional College Spirit Award
- Sponsored by Bunnings, Port Macquarie
Our College prayer aims to capture all that we stand for at St Joseph’s Regional College. It speaks of respect, justice, faith, striving for excellence and preparing for the challenges of creating a better tomorrow. It is everything that Catholic education is about.
The St Joseph’s Regional College Spirit Award recognises those students who do not settle for less. It isn’t for excellence in one area but for those students across the school who live out the words of our prayer, whose actions and thoughts make this world a better place – in the classroom, the playground, with friends, in areas of interest and even when doing things they might not particularly enjoy.
Congratulations to the worthy College Spirit Award recipients:
Sophie Cheers and Liam Ross.

Year 8 Camp
Thank you to the twenty teachers and teacher's assistants who took time away from their families to be with our Year 8 students at the South West Rocks Camp. I would like to particularly mention Mrs Claire Goldie, Year 8 Coordinator along with Mr John Rossington and the PE staff for their organisation of this year's camp. It was really wonderful to have such positive feedback regarding our students' behaviour while on the camp. I refer you to Mrs Goldie's report in this newsletter.

Year 8 Camp
After a wet and windy start to Year 8 camp, the sun shone and the students were able to experience the best that outdoor education can offer at beautiful South West Rocks.
Year 8 began their time with fun games and team-building activities in the South West Rocks Surf Club complete with a BBQ lunch. We then got out into nature, where the students set up their tents. I was amazed by the comfy set-up that many students had organised for themselves and was very jealous of all the delicious looking meals that they cooked for their group!
Over the four days, the students enjoyed plenty of time relaxing with their friends and enjoying the outdoors. They had the opportunity to try a range of exciting structured activities including bushwalking, kayaking, surfing, orienteering and beach activities. Students tried their hand at creating fire and building rafts. I was so impressed with the way all of the groups demonstrated their teamwork skills. They also learnt plenty of valuable skills, such as, keeping the tent zipped up to avoid the kangaroos eating all of the food!
Year 8 also had plenty of student-centred time where they swam, enjoyed beach walks, played beach games and spent time connecting with their peers. I am sure many new friendships were made!
Once the sun went down, the evening schedule was packed with fun activities such as attempting to complete an escape-room style activity of the old Gaol, getting their dancing shoes on, being shown the astronomical wonders, sharing their wonderful singing voices at musical trivia and enjoying movies under the stars.
Year 8 certainly should be commended for demonstrating their ongoing resilience, dedication and kindness as all of these attributes were certainly on show during the camp. I am so proud of all of the students for getting involved in the many activities that were on offer. I would like to congratulate Sophie Bentley and Oliver Koivu who were awarded Best Camper.
A big shout out goes to thank all of the wonderful teachers involved throughout the camp but particularly to Mr Rossington who organised such a well-run, entertaining and fun camp.

Connecting Community
Congratulations to Sheyleace Stevens, whose artwork was recently displayed in an exhibition held at the Port Macquarie Library. The exhibition enables Community Housing Limited (CHL) tenants to share their stories and raise awareness about mental health wellbeing. The exhibition was funded by a Mental Health Month grant from Way Ahead.
Sheyleace, a proud Dunghutti woman said: "Painting connects her to her culture. It defines who I am". Sheyleace draws her inspiration for the colours from the ocean and from the waterways in the local area. Sheyleace said, "I love to paint and create artworks that reflect our deadly region".
At our College assembly, students who recently completed the Bronze Medallion course were presented with their Patrol Uniforms in recognition of their achievements in the course. The course, run as an initiative of Club Members and teachers Dylan Sainsbury and Tom Inatey, was jointly sponsored by the Club and the College, aiming to boost participation in Surf Life Saving as well as supporting community service initiatives at the College.
Congratulations to all participants.
