That's a wrap for 2022, and what a BIG week we have had to finish the term off.
In this week's newsletter, we feature an overview of the 2022 Year 7-10 Academic and, Service and Spirit Ceremonies. I thank Mr Ian Lutton, Leader of Curriculum, and our wonderful office staff for their organisation of these ceremonies.
On Wednesday, we held our Thanksgiving Christmas Mass. This was a chance for both staff and students to reflect and give thanks for the many opportunities here at St Joseph's Regional College. Thank you to Mr Timo Gobius, Leader of Evangelisation, Youth Ministry Offices, Emily Burg and Ella Smith and Mrs Julie Hickling for their organisation of the Christmas Mass on Wednesday.
This week, we also announced our 2023 Junior Pastoral Care Leaders and for the first time, we now have, Year 11 Leaders. I congratulate all students who were presented with their badge after Mass on Wednesday, and I look forward to seeing these students grow and develop in their leadership roles. I thank Ms Cheryl Hyde, Leader of Pastoral Care Programs, for her organisation of our newly appointed leaders. We will feature our newly appointed junior leaders in the first newsletter of 2023.
The Junior Sports Awards was also held on Wednesday, and I congratulate all students on a successful year in sport. This year has proven to be difficult with the number of wet weather postponements. I thank and commend Mr Damien Kelly, Leader of Sport for the calm way he went about rearranging events.
I congratulate Year 12 2022 on fantastic HSC and ATAR results which were released on Thursday. Our Year 12 cohort was invited back to the College on Thursday for a celebration breakfast in honour of their hard work, and it was also an opportunity to gather with their peers one final time. A special newsletter with an overview of results is being prepared for families and will be emailed out as soon as possible. Thank you to Mr Ian Lutton, Leader of Curriculum and Mrs Kellie Croft, Leader of Student Wellbeing for facilitating the Year 12 results morning
At the Year 7-10 Award Ceremony, I addressed our College community and would like to share this with you.

I commend our staff and our students who have shown a continued commitment to our changing school environment, as we return to pre-covid routines.
I particularly would like to acknowledge our 2022 Junior Pastoral Care Leaders. These young leaders have done an exceptional job and should be justifiably proud of your efforts this year. I would like to extend best wishes to the parents of our Year 10 families, to those families who will see their sons and daughters embark on a new educational journey at Newman Senior Technical College in 2023, and also to other students who are leaving us to pursue other ventures. Thank you for your loyalty and support for our wonderful College; and we wish you well in the future.
On behalf of the College community, I once again thank you for being part of our family and extend my warm congratulations to our award winners at this ceremony and our Service and Spirit Award ceremony.
I wish you all a very safe, holy and joyful Christmas season.
A Christmas Prayer
Thank you for all the fun and excitement of Christmas.
Thank you for the amazing nativity story, that tells us about the birth of Jesus. Thank you for sending us your Son, a gift from you into this world.
As we look at the lights on the tree,
remind us of the light Jesus brought to this Earth.
When we sing songs and carols,
remind us of the hope Jesus showed everyone.
And as we open the gifts and presents, remind us that Jesus was the best gift ever. Help us to share special times with family and friends this Christmas,
and to share the light, hope and gift of Jesus to the world..
I wish all families a safe and restful break. May your homes be filled with the joy and blessings of Christmas.

Principal
Change to Traffic Management Policy
In Term 2 we commenced a process of reviewing our Traffic Management Policy in consultation with the Catholic Schools Office and the Parish. The safety of our students is our number one priority and we are in a position to trial new procedures in 2023.
Please refer to the map below which outlines the changes.
The main changes are in place to:
- avoid students crossing the road in unsafe places
- allow buses to enter and exit in a timely manner so the majority of our students can be transported home and/or transfer stations safely
- to facilitate traffic flow thus avoiding gridlock in the case of emergency vehicles needing to access the site
Best practice is for students to catch a bus, or walk home if they live in the local vicinity. I understand that is not always practical.
Parents collecting their children by car will need to be mindful of the following changes:
- The drop-off and pick-up zone is a NO PARKING zone. Cars can sit in the zone for 2-3 minutes then will need to move on. You will be required to drive into a visitor car park space or drive out of the grounds and around the roundabout on College Drive/Chancellors Drive to re-enter if you exceed the 2-3 minutes.
- Bus Zones are STRICTLY NO PARKING zones.
- The road past the Administration Building is now ONE WAY.
- If parents park in the Visitor Parking area, they must walk across to the drop-off and pick-up zone and collect their child to take them to the car.
- Cars are required to park REAR to KERB.
We are adding two new pedestrian crossings on-site to facilitate students to safely walk to and from the College.
The speed limit on-site remains at 10km per hour.
Thank you for your continued support to ensure all of our community stakeholders, particularly our students, are safe at drop-off and pick-up times.
The updated Traffic Management Policy can be found on our College website on the Policy & Procedures page, which is located under the 'About' tab.

Christmas Mass
Our End of Year Thanksgiving Mass was held in our College Hall on Wednesday morning. Fr Roland celebrated mass and many students from Years 7-11 assisted by reading, carrying gifts, and altar serving. The Year 10 Youth Ministry students created a Nativity Scene at the beginning of Mass which helped us focus on the reason that we celebrate Christmas. Our Year 10 Music students, ably led through many rehearsals by Ms McNamara (with support from Mr Bushe), provided the music for the Mass which included our regular Mass music and some Christmas Carols.
As Sunday was the beginning of the 4th week in Advent, the first reading was from the Prophet Isaiah who foretold the birth of a child who would be called ‘Emmanuel” or “God is with us”. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel tells the story of this prophecy coming to fulfilment, with Mary bearing a child even though she had not been with her betrothed, Joseph. Fr Roland spoke about what this means for us and asked us to focus on the birth of Jesus which is the reason for Christmas and what this means for Christians around the world. He also encouraged us to reflect on all the things we had learned this year and to show gratitude for all we have on offer here at the College.
So as we give each other gifts and wish each other Merry Christmas, may we all reflect on the real meaning of this celebration and be thankful for our many blessings and pass on the love of Christ that Jesus modelled for us to those less fortunate than us this Christmas.

Rounds Classes
Years 8-10 Rounds Classes for 2023 have now been completed following strategic and careful consultation with Leaders of Wellbeing, teaching staff and students. In some instances, student and parent requests for a change of rounds class were able to be accommodated on a case-by-case basis. Due to increased enrolments and limited scope for movement between classes, however, many requests for a change of rounds class have not been able to be made.
Students are reminded that the distinction between learning experiences and social experiences at school is an important one. Students should enter a new year ready to make new connections and ready to harness their classroom experiences for learning.
We thank our parents for their understanding and partnership during this process and we look forward to continuing this partnership into 2023. If your child is concerned about their rounds class placement, please provide reassurance that they will continue to be well-supported at school.
Vaping: Information & Awareness
How to Support my Child if they are Vaping
Although advertising and peers can heavily influence your teen’s decisions, the impact you have as a parent, carries enormous weight. Research has found that parental involvement and a positive outlook can make a significant difference in healthy decision-making, both now and in the future.
Take a Health Approach
If you discover that your teen is vaping, address it as you would any other risk to your child’s health. Try to resist the urge to lecture, yell or punish your child. It is important to keep the lines of communication open and show your child that you are concerned about their health and safety.
Although purchasing vapes containing nicotine without a prescription is illegal in Australia, many vapes labelled as nicotine-free do contain nicotine. Your child may need support to stop vaping as nicotine is very addictive. The more your child vapes, the more both the brain and body will get used to having nicotine, and the harder it is to go without it. When a person stops vaping, even for a short period, they can experience withdrawal, including strong cravings, irritability, fatigue, headache, sleeplessness and difficulty concentrating.
Conversation Starters
Make sure your child recognises how much you care about them and that the conversation is coming from a place of unconditional love, support and concern for their wellbeing. Use the conversation starters below to understand if your child may be continuing to vape to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Do you continue to vape even though you want to stop or think it’s hurting you in some way?
- Do you feel anxious or irritable when you want to use your vape but can’t?
- Do thoughts about vaping interrupt you when you are focused on other activities? Do you vape at school? How often?
- Have you ever tried to stop vaping but couldn’t?
- Do you feel like you have lost control over your vaping?
Support to Quit Vaping
Read this helpful infographic for suggestions about how to support your child to quit vaping.

Reports for students in Years 7-10 will be available on Friday, 16th December via our Parent Portal. All reports are now issued electronically, and paper copies will only be issued on request.
The Parent Portal is a secure web-based application that contains information about the College and your child, including timetables, attendance, and semester reports, along with class and teacher information. All past reports can also be accessed on the Parent Portal, and future reports will be uploaded as they become available.
Any parent not yet registered to access reports electronically will need to create an account as the first step. For security reasons, the username for this account must be your email address recorded at the school.
Instructions on how to access the Parent Portal are below and can also be found on the College website.
Requisites
Please find following the list of requisites for Years 8, 9 and 10.
For Year 11 students, the stationery requirements differ for each course. They are able to choose what best works for them in their course. Most senior students bring a ring folder with note dividers for each course.
Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching
Congratulations to SJRC alumni Mary Bouwer (nee. Shelley) and Priya Schuetz who were part of the first cohort to graduate from the University of NSW’s full six-year medical program in Port Macquarie. Port Macquarie is the first regional centre to offer the full undergraduate medical program outside of Sydney. Only 11 students were part of the full program with another five students joining the class along the way. Dr Mary Bouwer will complete her internship at Wagga Wagga Base hospital, and hopes to become a rural generalist doctor. Rural generalists are GPs who provide primary care services, emergency medicine and have training in additional skills such as obstetrics and anaesthetics.
Dr Priya Schuetz will complete her internship at Orange Base Hospital and wants to remain working in rural medicine, however, she has not yet decided on her area of speciality.
Amazing achievements, we are so very proud of these exceptional young women.
